My Music Monday

Last Monday  of the month. My theme didn't really work out, but whatta gonna do?

Now I'm just doing semi-random songs.

Today is Love Fame Tragedy's song "Hardcore".  Not like porn, so don't get too excited.

I did a song by this group back in 2019.

I thought that song was a one-off, but it turns out they had an entire album. Who knew?  ....except probably lots o'people.

"Hardcore" popped up in the gym. Again, when my playlist runs out, my iPhone just goes into Apple Music and starts selecting stuff.  This was one.

I'm totally enjoying it.

Maxwell's Silver Hammer

I honestly do not want to write about the would-be attack on Nancy Pelosi, and the actual attack on her husband

Pelosi is a middling politician at best and a fairly crappy Speaker of the House. That said, I don't wish harm on her.

And that makes me a hypocrite, because I'd have been ok with someone cold-cocking Paul Ryan to the point he got a TBI. The difference with me and the GOP is that I admit I'm a hypocrite.

Hopefully that is not our only difference, but.........you never know.

Isn't this attack just a redux on an individual level of January 6th?  Or the personal attacks - physical and otherwise - since BLOTUS became a candidate back in 2015?  It's just on another level.  ....and mark my words, the first of what is to become a string of them.

As 710 pointed out, next time it will just be explosives put outside their (or someone like them) house. Not even a stretch - and the FBI, with all its wisdom, has yet to find who placed two bombs at the Capitol.

We, as a nation, are closer to the verge of a civil war.

There is no stopping folks like this. And it's not like the GOP is denouncing them or their actions.

Verbal sparring got Rapist Brett Kavanaugh Congress-appointed security after his decision on Roe v Wade. He got a-scared by people protesting in front of his house or harassing the restaurants to which he patronizes. Imagine how upsetting that might be compared to sexual assault.   ....what kind of world is this when you can't order your lobster bisque in peace.

I have yet to hear Congress act on security for the Speaker. And for Kavanaugh, they approved it in like 36 hours.  You know they won't do a thing for a democrat, let alone a woman.

Every time you think this country can't get more fucked up, they prove me wrong.

Autumn Leaves

It's not an exclusive Shep week, but it's close.  Shep in Autumn.

Saturday walk around the park.

Sunday walk at reclaimed golf course. Lots of steep hills and lots of falling leaves.

There was a Halloween dog parade last weekend.  We missed it, and I don't think Shep would allow us to dress him up.  But I did see this pic of an Imperial Walker.  Loved it.

I don't know if it's a colder season, but lately he loves pressing himself into the back cushions on the upstairs sofa.

Though he's perfectly fine crashing on the downstairs on too.

Same park as the top pic.  Different day.

710 took this when he was home and sent it to me at work.
I would have loved to have been there.

Out of Time

I've run out of time for the day.

Long work day, after the gym, that is.  And then I had to go to an awards ceremony.

One of my nurses was anonymously nominated for an award. Not only did she win it, but she got the system nurse of the year award.

That's a huge deal. We have 15 hospital system and hundreds of practice sites in the ambulatory world.

To be selected the best of the best is incredible.

Truth being told, did I want to be at a ceremony until 20:00?  I did not. But there is no way I didn't want to show my support. And I got to meet her parents and her KEY-ute husband.

There were 22 awards given out overall. And I was kind of irked that she wasn't singled singled out. It was the top award and they just did every awardee alphabetically. It would have been nice acknowledged for that.

She was extremely excited that I came to support her. Of course, I would. A good boss would or should.

But I got home well after 20:00, still had to eat dinner (late) and get my gym bag together

Now it's bed time.

Who Wants to be a Billionaire ?

"I don't."   ......said Ye.

I love that this knob literally lost his billionaire status overnight due to his anti-Semitic remarks.

His management team fired him, as did the Gap and Adidas, though those last two took a little bit of time to pull the trigger - mostly the Gap.

Oh, his record company also didn't re-up his contract.

I'm 99.3% sure I've never actually heard a Kanye West song. And I certainly never purchased anything he "designed" for the clothing or shoe manufacturers. I'm not sure who these people are who do.

Here's what I do know............

The fucking GOP must be so torn right now.

West says the right things. Well, right for the GOP and their jew-hatred. And it's done by a very wealthy man - who is black - who wears "White Lives Matter". And he doesn't wear it ironically.  Yet at the heart of it - he is a black man..........and you know...........ick.  That goes against everything they are, though they are branching out a bit with Herschel Walker.

But.........rich and hates Jews and loves whites.  You gotta figure that's gonna win out.  And apparently he and Walker don't mind being the tokens in this group of bigots.

As his money dries up, will they stick around to support him?  I'm sure the PR is already in motion about how horrible all the companies who dropped him actually are. The non-cancelling GOP will start boycotts to cancel.

Good thing he and Kim Kardashiwhore are divorced already, so she'd be having to pay him spousal support / alimony.

Record of the Month

I figured I'd do a monthly 'what I'm listening to' kind of thing. This could be viewed as a lame placeholder kind of post. And probably it is. But it's my blog! So there!

It's been seven years - almost - since the last Watkins Family Hour album.  Kind of.

There was one two years ago, but it really just had Sara and Sean Watkins (brother and sister). The one seven years ago was culled from having other artists at their monthly live shows in Los Angeles - Fiona Apple, Benmont Tench, are amongst the rotating musicians who show up and perform with the brother an sister.  None of additional those folks were on the 2020 release.

I suspect Covid.

But Vol II is out and includes the above four plus others - including Jackson Browne, Jon Brion and some others of whom I've never heard.

Even with the acclaimed guests, the show still belongs to Sean and Sara. Yes Browne sings on a cover of his own song, so that's not weird, right?  He doesn't take lead.  Apple does a good job on "(Remember Me) I'm the One Who Loves You".  And there is a nice rendition of Zombie's song - with the triple or four-part harmony - "the Way I Feel Inside".

The musicianship is spot-on, but you kind of expect it to be. As this isn't a live recording at one of their shows, you don't quite the spontaneity of that kind of gathering, but they all do a great job of pulling it together.

I don't know if the Watkins siblings will join Chris Thiel for a new Nickel Creek disk or not anytime soon. I saw a Tweet months ago from Thiel talking about a songwriting week with the other two, so here's hoping.

While the Family Hour isn't true bluegrass, it hits the right amount of that to do it justice.

I Will

I was sad to hear about Leslie Jordan's passing yesterday.

Inarguably (IMHO), he was the only consistently funny thing about Will & Grace

Yeah yeah, most of them had their moments here and there, but consistently......it was him. Honestly, it's the reason they had so many guest stars traipse through that landmine of a show - the four regulars, especially the title characters were the - pun firmly intended - straight men.

I'm not 100% sure Jordan was acting, as the number of things I have seen him in - and his IMBD credits are quite extensive - he's been a version of his Beverly Leslie character.  Maybe that was just him, and that was fine.

He's been in other series - dating back to when apparently John Ritter and Billy Bob Thornton were on tv together. I'm now quite sure when that happened.....or why.....but it did.  He's also in some new show I've  never seen with Blossom / Amy Farrah Fowler / Jeopardy host.

....and most importantly, he was on Pee Wee's Playhouse

Jordan was doing some pandemic videos - I think on Instagram. They were funny and on-point, so those will be missed.

Of course, my big hope is that this will not get the WIll & Grace back together anytime soon

My Music Monday

I'm calling it on my theme for this month.  I couldn't pull it off.  You're just getting random music today.

Peter Bjorn and John have had some minor hits, thought they made have made some dough on their song "Second Chance" which became the theme to an inexplicable "long run" (read; more than one season) for the "sit-com" Two Broke Girls

But I liked some of their stuff and their collaboration on Chrissie Hynde's solo disk made me like them more. Hers is a woefully overlooked album.

But from their 2016 disk comes the song "Dominos".  I kind of like it.

Nobody Does it Better

Granted, what I'm considering a "movie" these days might be a stretch. Yet here we are.

Last night we happened upon the Sound of 007. Yes, a documentary of the music of James Bond. Not just the themes but the scores as well.

Not that long after compact discs were released - mid to late 80s - "they" released all Bond themes up until that year, which I think ended with Duran Duran's "a View to a Kill".

Since then, I'm sure they could release another volume with what came later.

I have my favourites, of course, from the version I had. I mean, sure, Shirley Bassey is great. Well, maybe not "Moonraker". But I have a soft spot for Lulu's "Man with the Golden Gun" and Nancy Sinatra's "You Only Live Twice".  ....and yes, Duran Duran.

Yes, there were major weak songs:  see "Moonraker" or "All Time High" with Rita Coolidge.  Rita Fucking Coolidge?  Was Carol Channing busy?  I have never been a fan of Louis Armstrong.  Sue me.

In that first 25 year era, there was some interesting anecdotes.  Sinatra's song was a debacle and had to be pieced together from over 20 takes. Tom Jones' "Thunderball"?  One take.

John Barry had some hand into most of those first 25 years (it seems working with Duran Duran might have ended the Bond relationship). And this themes were utilized here and there since. But with "Live and Let Die", there was a change in process. Singer / Songwriters started being utilized into many of the themes, starting with Paul McCartney & Wings.

The next 25 years it was hit and miss, as the producers seemed to chase the big names for the sake of big names.  That is my take. The documentary doesn't even try to imply that. But it's done by the studio who made the Bond films, so they wouldn't, would they?

People derided a-ha and their theme, and while it wasn't stellar, it wasn't nearly as bad as lot of other crap.

Seriously, Madonna?  HORRID. All auto-tune and no talent.  Sheryl Crow???  Sam Smith?  The man couldn't find a note with GPS.

Garbage wasn't bad. For what I think of Jack White, his was a least new and energetic. No one is ever gonna get me to understand the appeal of Billie Ellish.  As a person, she seems great. As a singer......ehhhhh. But even I'll take her over most in that upper paragraph.

I honestly had no idea that Tina Turner or Gladys Knight even had their own theme songs. As for "For Your Eyes Only", I'd take Blondie's rejected version of "For Your Eyes Only" over Sheena Easton any day.

I think what was more interesting than what they talked about are the artists they left off the doc, though did we think Madonna was going to weigh-in here?  I'm surprised Crow didn't - she seems to go to the opening of an envelope.

It was all somewhat entertaining, but not horribly informative overall.  There were snippets which would have made it better had there been more. But it was something to watch on a Saturday night.

Nice to See You

It's Saturday. Pet day.  I'm still trying to figure this out with not having Sophie. I got some work to do, but we'll get there.

Shep is super manipulative come noon on the weekends.
He ain't playin' around when he wants to go on a trip.

I was texting with Mike this last week, and he sent me a pic of Ollie - all newly groomed.
He's a handsome sort.  Ollie that is.   Mike too.........I suppose.

Bailey - still being abused by my sister.

Colour Me In

First off, I want to acknowledge I get that I have Hobbitt feet with all the hairs on the toes So, I don't need any of youz to be pointing it out. You're not the first and no doubt the last, so save your energy.

As you saw, I got my toes polished a few months back when they did my pedicure.

I mean - why not?

I'm basically paying for it whether they did it or not and why not do some self-expression?

Does anyone - who is not 710 - really care?  And he only faux guffaws at the site.
Being October, I went with Halloween-themed piggies.

Admittedly, I wasn't sure if they'd do two different colours, but they were all into it.  Yes. They.  The gals who worked there all - or mostly all - chatted about it and what a great idea it was.

Duh!

I mean, I'm not that Halloween guy. I hand out candy but don't really decorate the house or scare folks other than with my every-day demeanor and looks.  I did buy pumpkins this year and the deer and squirrels are seemingly very very happy that I did. I'm ok with it, they gotta eat too.

Of course, the "joke" is, it's colder out. Even at home I wear socks - so no one other than the folks in the locker room has seen my tootsies.  ......and I'm 90% sure no one is looking down as I get ready to shower or change post-shower.

Even if they did, I doubt anyone is gonna strike up a convo about them.

710 didn't even ask if I got colour this time, nor has he seen them.

Candidate

I don't presume that everyone's build up to the November 2022 election is as horrible as Ohio.

Ohio any more is just contentious in the best of times. Since the 2016 BLOTUS run until now has just been downright hate-filled and depressing AF.

Honestly, we can barely stand to watch Jeopardy, as that's when the ads seems to take place. One right after another - that may as well have 2x4s with nails in them hitting their opponents.

These started in MARCH.

Yes, it was for the primaries, but they've never stopped. Never slowed down. TV advertising must me way less expensive than I expected. I just cannot fathom the candidates have this much money.

And yes - the candidates. Not PACS, as they are running their own ads.

Our U.S. Senate race is the biggest one. I am so not a fan of the democrat. I believe him to be the Joe Manchin of Ohio. When I told this to a colleague who asked me to go to an event to meet him, I was disinvited. They weren't wrong to cancel me.  The same person also asked and rescinded an invite to meet Nancy Pelosi this week.

Again, right to not include me.

But the republican opponent is a putz named J.D. Vance. You might know him as the author of a well known book and tv movie I didn't read or see, Hillbilly Elegy

During the BLOTUS run in '16 and most of this term Vance was outwardly and vocally anti-BLOTUS, But now his tongue is firmly cleaning the inside of BLOTUS' colon on a daily basis. What a guy will do to win is incredible. Nor backbone. No conviction. No morals.

Ya see - J.D. needs someone to blame for his mother being a crack whore.......and which better way (well other than making a bunch of money writing about it) than blaming those filthy Mexicans that we let into this country by not building "that wall!".

I mean, sometimes you're a filthy crack whore because you like giving away your body for crack. I've done a lot more for a lot less. But republicunts don't believe in personal responsibility. Blame and distraction they get.

But I've voted. I dropped off the ballot last Sunday. Whatever I think about Tim Ryan, I think less of Vance.   ......and you might be able to see if you embiggen the image.

I have zero idea how this will turn out. If you are on FB and get political anything, whatever candidate is in your feed is always down by 2%.  Always.  They just need a "little" more money to win.

For people who don't read the polling data - we have a democratic candidate for governor, but I can tell you she's not near 2% off.  More like 22% off. She's so poor ("how poor is she???") that we are two weeks (?) away from the election and she's the only person who hasn't had an ad.

Ryan did gain some points at the debates - saying Vance is pro-cop, but then how he was asking people to raise money for the insurrectionists who assault police officers - and backed it up immediately with Vance's own Twitter feed and emails. The guy couldn't even try to rebut it.

Unfortunately, with voters, facts make very little difference. I guess we'll just see who turns out at the polls. But if Vance loses, I'm sure "stolen election" will be at every GOPer's lips.

Boys of Summer

Well, THAT was $50 down the drain.

Admittedly, I haven't been following baseball as much this year as in the past.

Perhaps it is the transition from the Indians to the Guardians, and while little has changed but the name and ugly logo, I felt disconnected from it all.

I knew they were in first place in the Central Division. I knew "we" had that sewn well before the end of the season.

....but then it was post-season and I had nothing to wear.

I had not bought one 'Guardian' anything. I felt bad-ish. So off to the team shop I went.

This is a problem for me in many ways. In my pea-brain, I have an idea of what I want and what I think should be there.  This never matches up.

Designs and styles are always wrong - in my honest opinion. But like most of my clothes shopping, it's impulsive and turns out to be wrong.

I actually am ok with the design on this shirt. But lord, it's dated. Already.

Post season was short lived. Yeah yeah, we beat Tampa Bay, which led it to Round Two with the New York Yankees.  But yesterday we lost that series in four games.

So instead of just having a team shirt I can wear anytime over the years, I bought into the generic post-season, which technically could have gone through the World Series.

And since it was special post-season, I only paid $50 for..............a t-shirt. One that is a reminder we didn't actually get far into the post-season.

Way go go, Blobby.

Song by: Don Henley

You're My Favourite Waste of Time

You know, some days it's just all I can do to jot down thoughts here.

I rarely get to comment on blogs as I used to. I mean, I"d like to, but who has the time?  And when I find it, the moment has passed, as their entry is now days old - and chances are someone probably wrote something smarter and wittier.

....well.......smarter.

And while I'd LOVE to just fuck with likes of BLOTUS and Kanye Ye, the idea of setting up accounts at Parler or Truth Social seems tiresome, and trolling could be a full time job.

Let's face it, I wouldn't last long there even if I wanted to take the time. They're all about "free speech" until it's against either one of them.

Hell, I got my hand slapped - pretty hard actually - on Twitter two years ago when I wished harm on Mitt Romney and his family when he refused to take a stand after RBG died and they pushed through that cunt of a Supreme Court justice.

My wish wasn't even a violent one. Just how I wish them no peace and a life full of pain the rest of their days.  I got threatened with a life-time ban...............while in the meantime, BLOTUS is upper-casing every tweet that were hate-filled and lies.  So, don't tell me he didn't get special treatment.

Getting semi-banned from Twitter was fine. Yes, I can go there and read shit, but I didn't. It's been a g-dsend.  While I've given up most news outlets anyway, this gave me the freedom to give up fake news outlets.

Mind you, if I could write some automatic algorithm that just sent baseless mean, but hilarious messages every so many minutes, I'd do it just to clog the system. But again, who has the time.  Or the knowledge.  I didn't even get a C++ in computer programming.

And with Musk taking over Twitter, having the ability would be wonderful. I mean, he's going to ruin an already flawed platform, but wouldn't it be great to make it so much more annoying that he threw away $44 BILLION dollars?    ......you know, instead of feeding every poverty stricken person on earth for life?

Kanye and BLOTUS should merge their flailing platforms. I mean, they totally deserve each other.

My Music Monday

Same song title all month. Different songs. Different artists.

The title is "Drive".

This week's artist is R.E.M.

Like I said last week, this selection keeps the same beat throughout the song. No variation.

Back in {sigh} 1992, I thought this song, and its album, Automatic for the People, to be a huge departure for the band.  Time and experience might have eroded that thought.  Now that shift seems perfectly natural.

"Drive" was the lead single from Automatic. It would become one of my favourite albums of theirs, if only for "Nightswimming" and "the Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight", though there are other great songs on this disk.

Anymore, I don't seek out "Drive", but when it pops up, I never turn it off.

To hear Adam Scott, or "Ben Wyatt" on Parks & Rec, tell the story - he's in the crowd of this video.

Tired of Waiting For You

It's 21:03.

And nothing.

I kind of dicked the day away. I mean not really.

I did the puzzle thing:  Worlde in 3.  Worldle in 1. Spelling Bee Queen Bee in about 30 minutes. I totally failed at Heardle. But I don't get it in 2 tries, I usually quit the game.

I did the gym thing. I did my cardio and it was arm day - so it was good. There were definite times I didn't feel I put my all into it, but at least I went and did something.

We did the dog walk thing. That's a must. Shep won't it allow it not to happen. As you can see, it was pretty. Clear in terms of air quality and colours are in full swing. It was a bit chilly now and again, but doable.  It was a good walk - one where the trails had far too many children (read: one or more). Shep enjoyed himself - and that's all that mattered.

And I had my monthly pedicure.

What I didn't do was craft a post.  Not really.

That's ok. They can't all be winners.

Now it's 21:29 and I need to get to bed.  I'm exhausted.

Mid-Air

Without cat pictures, posts on Saturdays might not have as many shots. But it's quality over quantity, no?

Mid-Air. Happy to seem me and get in the car.  He loves to travel.

Bailey takes a golf cart ride.
Oddly she doesn't go golfing, but she loves riding around the gated hood in one.

Meet Lando.

He might be my new favourite at daycare!

Shep confers with a wooly bear to predict Winter.
It's going to be colder and snowier than normal, the believe.

White Winos

How time flies.

For folks who have been reading this forever, you might remember my man-date, Scott.

After leaving the same company about the same time almost a decade ago, we just haven't seen each other much, even though we only live a few miles apart.

That his wife isn't fond of me doesn't help. Let's be honest, that's a fairly large club to which she belongs.

I haven't seen Scott in almost a year. We've tried to make arrangements, but you know, life gets in the way. We've had three cancellations in as many weeks - all his. Last evening we made it work.

We may have gone back to the haunt of our first "date". Oh, the establishment isn't the same, just the location remains the same. We may have split an entire bottle of wine.

The 'what's new' catch up isn't a lot. Work mostly. I did catch up about his kids. He has a gay son who just moved in with the guy whom he's been dating. He likes the guy, he jokingly said, more than his own son. I can relate. I'm 90% sure my parents liked 710 more than me. To his advantage, the local police chief didn't know 710 at all, let alone by his first name.

We are trying to make this a more regular thing. More than once per year would be nice. We will see if we can attempt this.  Right now I'm on the hook for the next bottle, as he paid this time.

We took this horrible photo - of both of us - to send to a former colleague who wanted to join us. She still works for the company - or an iteration of - that we left.  I should have taken a few more options, but we're stuck with this one.

12 of 12

 So I'm doing my 150th (!!!!) 12 of 12.

Normally it is 12 pictures taken on the 12th of the month. Since I only post once per day, you get my images the following day. All pictures taken with my iPhone. Click images to enlarge, if you choose.

Created by Chad Darnell and picked up from, what I can tell, any number of random bloggers who then link back to him and vice versa. Chad is no longer doing this, nor is successor coordinating the linking of other 12 of 12'ers anymore. Erik is back and I think he's picking up 12 of 12 again.

04:02.  Sitting in the dark with Shep.

He was majorly antsy. We went of a walk at 03:14 !!!! He barely settled down here.

04:39.  More semi-frantic behaviour.

I took him out to the backyard. He barked 710 awake after I left at 04:45.

05:09.  Kettle Bell.

It's shoulder and back day!

06:35.  Morning caffeine at my newly renovated Starbucks.

07:34.  Daily revenue spreadsheet.

12:05.  Walking to my car.

12:22. Talking to my friend Doug on my car ride. Don't worry - it was bluetooth'd.

13:13.  My different-site work destination.

16:14. ...came to see the damage to a space I'm taking over, that had a flood water intrusion.

17:24.  Updates to my lappy before shutting down.

18:11.  Doggy Daycare Pick-Up.

19:01.  Packing gym bag for tomorrow morning.

That's it!

Cooking with Blobby

It seems like forever since I did one of these.

But you know.......summer. That meant a ton of grilling and nothing horribly new or innovative.

Still, cooking relaxes me and 710 is usually a sport on letting me do what I want in the kitchen without too much push back. Granted, if he doesn't like it he won't say it, but he won't pretend praise me either.

Blobby can take a hint.

I went with Pan-Seared Chicken Thighs With Parsley and Lemon.

The name pretty much says it all, though Blobby didn't really do it all it seems.  ....more on that in a bit.

INGREDIENTS Yield: 4 servings

1 bunch fresh flat-leaf parsley (3 to 4 ounces)
10 garlic cloves, peeled
1 jalapeño, stemmed
2 tablespoons capers
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, plus wedges for serving
2 teaspoons granulated sugar
Kosher salt and black pepper
½ cup buttermilk
1½ pounds boneless, skinless chicken thighs
Olive oil, as needed

PREPARATION

Step 1 Separate the tough parsley stems from the leaves and tender stems. Coarsely chop the tough stems.

Step 2 In a food processor, add the chopped parsley stems, garlic, jalapeño, capers, lemon juice, sugar, 1½ teaspoons salt, ½ teaspoon pepper and the buttermilk; blitz until smooth. Transfer to a medium bowl and add the chicken; turn to evenly coat. Cover and refrigerate to marinate for at least 30 minutes and up to 24 hours.  (I let it go for about 22 hours.)

Step 3 Heat a large, preferably nonstick skillet over medium-high and add 2 tablespoons olive oil. Add the reserved parsley leaves and tender stems and cook, stirring occasionally, until considerably wilted and bright green but charred in spots, 2 to 3 minutes. Season with salt and pepper; transfer to a platter.

It never charred. And it reduced down to nothing - like spinach.

Step 4 In the same skillet over medium-high, add enough oil to coat the bottom. Add the chicken with its marinade and cook until browned and caramelized in spots, 7 to 8 minutes per side. Transfer to the platter with the parsley and serve with lemon wedges, for spritzing.

This is where it fell apart.

Between the added oil and the marinade, there was no browning. At all. It basically braised. Yeah, it was cooked through for temp purposes, but..........you know..............green.  And not just a little.

The Grinch's chicken tasted fine, but........you know..........the Grinch.  It's pesto-like, but it's not the most appetizing colour.

Parsley isn't spinach. You can cook it down but it's still somewhat tough. As for the chicken, with e marinade, I got no taste of capers or jalapeño. It smelled of garlic - as there were 10 !!! cloves.  I mean, it all tasted fine, but not over the top great or anything.

I have four thighs left. Maybe I'll cut it up and make some kind of chicken salad.

710 he liked my enthusiasm and when I talked down the meal a bit, he said "you learn from your experience".   I injected........"you mean mistakes"........but he claims it was 'experiences'.

He is far too nice for me.
