Site of the Month

I suppose it's no secret that there is a music theme that runs through my blog. 

Back in 2011, when having inaugural drinks with Spo and Someone when I was in Phoenix, the latter asked if it was a music blog. 

It isn't, it wasn't. While most posts have a song title and an associate artist, it is schtick. Blogs have to have their own identity, so to speak - I opted for a common thread, and with my love of music, it seemed natural. 

Honestly, I co-opted the idea from a now defunct blog (whose name escapes me). The post titles were a brief lyrical phrase, which the noted the song at the end of each entry. I just gave it a twist. 

Hey! I never said I was original!

So, there is a website, a podcast and a Netflix show called Sound Exploder. All, in part, are similar, but not quite the same - though the topic is / are.

"They" break down songs.  

Kind of. 

Say, in the Killers' "When You Were Young", the show truly take it down to the instruments, the style, the experimentation. This was on Netflix. And while the Killers are represented on the site here, it's a different song. So, even through Song Exploders various medium - they don't always cover each avenue. 

With this site, the artists might not be as familiar to you. And the ones that are, they aren't necessarily the songs you'd think would be chosen or the most popular. To me, this is not a bad thing. 

On the tv version, they're picking the popular acts and popular songs (i.e.  R.E.M. has "Losing my Religion" on tv, but "Try Not to Breathe" on the site.). 

Now some episodes don't quite take the Killers / R.E.M. approach, but talk more about the impact of the song. That's well and good, but I do love the creation and production aspects of these things, so those are the ones that get my attention. 

I find it a good way to experience new music, appreciate older stuff that one might have taken for granted, or appreciate the thought and artistry of how things came to be.
