Monkey to Man

Marcia Brady could swoon over Davy Jones all she wanted. He wasn't even in my top three picks for Monkees.

Mike Nesmith was it.

Now mind you, like, 6 year old me didn't know what "it" was, but he caught my attention as the best Monkee - even though I didn't even know what that meant.

Maybe it was the wool cap or the Texas twang, but I am thinking it was the sideburns. Or a combo thingy.  .....but mostly the sideburns.

Oddly enough, just nine months ago, I made Nesmith a My Music Monday selection - and now he died. I think the two things are unrelated, but Rachel Sweet & Rex Smith might want to take some precautions....just in case.

I was sorry to hear of his passing, as he seemed like an affable guy.  His music was decent and most of it, even from the Monkees days had a bit of Texas twang in them......as most of what he did wasn't his own music in that band.

As I pointed out earlier this year, he scored big as a songwriter on Linda Ronstadt's "Different Drum". And yes, he changed (or first developed) the idea of music video.

He had a song out that was released shortly after the 'break-up' cancellation of the Monkees and it actually charted, but I didn't know it until the days of Napster back in 2000:  "Joanne".  For the last two decades I've kind of dug this song.

I'm trying not to make this blog a recently dead musician blog................but try as I might, I don't dictate who lives and dies.

Oh yeah, Davy was for the girls. I was kinda into Peter. As it were.

It's a good satisfying feeling to read somebody else appreciated Joanne, too. To be sure there are probably thousands and thousands of people that feel as we do. It's a gentle song; almost like a lullaby.
