My Music Monday

Remember in some post in the not so distant past, where I was "lamenting" Rebecca Black not having a follow-up single to "Friday"?

Well - folks, be careful what you joke about. Karma is a bitch.

So I think I'll go in quite the opposite direction today of Ms. Black:  the Clash.

The group was part of the first wave of British punk back in the mid to late '70s. The were punk before it truly had name, and became the unofficial leaders of the pack (along with the Sex Pistols) for the genre.

I'm pretty sure I haven't done a Clash song before. Their debut, self-titled disk was ok. London Calling was great.  Their follow-up to that, the triple album Sandanista! was amazing. And then, I felt they totally sold out with Combat Rock, which made their other music harder to tolerate. Yes, that last disk had their two biggest hits with "Should I Stay or Should I Go" and "Rock the Casbah" which just totally annoyed me.

Yet, on a recent trip, my phone played "Brand New Cadillac" from London Calling, and it's been playing in my head for days. It's just a great song and a great rendition.

Just over two minutes long, and it's not even an original song - at least to the Clash. It was a 1959 song that has been covered by numerous bands, but the Clash version always just makes me want to crank up the volume even louder.

Turn it up!

"Brand New Cadillac" always makes me think of an 80s montage involving a car trip....
