My Music Monday

You kind of knew a guilty pleasure would have to be a boy band selection - right?

I mean, it's like the guiltiest.

As an avid Billboard reader, I was enthralled by the business aspect of the almost simultaneously released albums by both the Backstreet Boys and 'Nsync.

The former sold over a million disks in its first week. At the time, it was a first for any disk or band. A few weeks later, the latter broke the record by about 200,000 units.

While I never purchased either one of their disks, I do like well-crafted pop song. And like it or not, both bands had some. Not a lot. Not enough. But some.

Internally, I kicked around which one I might use - both band and song. If this were truly the guiltiest of pleasure and I was going for the most mocking, I'd probably have gone with 'Nsync - though Justin Timberlake gives me the heebee jeebees.

I think the bigger surprise with that band wasn't that Lance Bass was gay - it would have to be that more (or all) of them weren't.

Anyhoo.....for the best crafted boy band song {vert arguably}, it would have to be Backstreet Boy's "I Want it That Way".

There isn't really anything groundbreaking about it. Some Swedes, who were all over writing pop songs in the '90s came up with it. It probably just landed at the Backstreet Boy's management first.

But since none of us (probably?) want to watch the band's video, I'll do you one better.  What looks like a tech office lip synching to the song into their PhotoBooth application and then editing it together.

I love that one office worker seemingly refuses to participate. I love it more at the end, when the alleged leader of the group claims what they did was "powerful".    It wasn't.  It isn't.
