My Music Monday

As I said last week, I'm doing cover music all month. I thought it would be easier to choose selections, but that does not seem to be the case.

Foiled again.

I have many song from which to choose, but when I try to commit to some of them, I more than often back away. I'm not sure why. Are the choices too obvious? Too obscure? More kitsch than I want them to be?

Personally, I think since I made a up a theme for myself (ooooh....theme months. care to make suggestions?), I put too much pressure on myself to come up with 4-5 great selections.

I made my selection this week, then looked for another one before coming back to my original pick. Rickie Lee Jones doing a cover of Traffic's 1971 song, "the Low Spark of High Heeled Boys".

Of course, I feel most people here don't know the Traffic version and even less know that Jones' even existed.

Written by Steve Winwood and Jim Capaldi, Traffic's version logs in at almost 12 minutes in length. But that was progressive rock for you back in the '70s.

Jones' take is less than half that time.

There are some similarities to the original version - the piano track rings fairly true. Gone are the horns. Jones as a much more slurred singing style than Winwood, but it really works for the song. I found Jones made the "Spark" more interesting, at least for me.
