I know I've featured Maria McKee here before, but on the way back from yoga yesterday, one of her songs popped up on my iPod in the car.
While I always liked her in the short-lived group, Lone Justice, her second album. Life is Sweet (to me) stands as a great body of work.
"Scarlover" stands out to me as the favouritist of all her songs. Yeah, it's not for everyone.
While it starts off with Neil Young / Crazy Horse distorted guitar work (ala Rust Never Sleeps), I really like the way she incorporates strings in with that guitar work later on in the song.
With vocals, McKee does a hard edged tone, but then switches into a slightly softer mode here and there. She actually does this throughout the entire album.
I connected with "Scarelover" from the word go. 17 years later the album and song are in semi-constant rotation.
Again, it was an indie release. There is no video.
