Cold Light

Last Sunday was time for our final Winter prep.  'twas sad. 'twas sad indeed.

The lawn mower got packed away.  The bike went into storage. The snowblower came out of hibernation.  The stakes for the driveway and treelawn went into place.

Sad. Sad. Sad.

Necessary all, still sad.  However, it was December before this happened. It could have just as easily been early November - which make Winter seem that much longer.

Of course, technically it is not even Winter, we have two weeks or so for that.  Yet Winter is a state of mind and weather than it is a date on the calendar.

Word on the street is that we are in for a harsh season.  I'm not pleased.  Damned fucking La Niña.

Hands down, AccuWeather.com's long-range experts agree that the Midwest and Great Lakes region will be dealt the worst of winter this year.

Bitterly cold blasts of arctic air are expected to invade the northern Plains, Midwest and Great Lakes from December through January, while snowfall averages above normal. "A couple of heavy hitters are possible [during this time],"
Fudge. Fudge.  Fudge.   .....but I didn't say 'fudge'.

The Farmer's Almanac says:  Winter will be slightly milder than normal, on average, with the coldest periods in late November, mid-December, late January, and early and mid-February. Precipitation will be below normal, with near-normal snowfall.

Who is to be believed?

If the coldest periods are to be in late November, bring it!  We were mostly in the 50s. That is a Winter I can deal with.  Alas, those damned farmers give themselves an out by also listing three other months.

Of course, I immediately think of a Groundhog Day quote:  "It's gonna becold, it's gonna be grey, and it's gonna last you for the rest of your life."

That is always what my winter feels like.
