Timothy

If I had any creativity or sense of what might go viral, I could create the next "Charlie Bit My Finger" or is the dress blue or gold thing.

Honestly, I'm not sure anyone knows what will hold a person's interest let alone take off and take the internet by the shorthairs.

This week, it seems it is Jimothy* - the wild raccoon from the Pacific Northwest who seemingly has a spinal deformity.

Animals get rejected so easily by mothers for any host of reasons. That Jimothy was not - and actually nurtured by his mother - is kind of exemplary.

It's made him an internet darling.

710 sent me a story about Jimothy and now my feed is heavily peppered by stories, drawings, music, clothing lines, baked goods (seriously) and whatnot.   .......about a raccoon.

The only problem is not one dime goes to Jimothy.

Once again, Americans are making bank off the backs of others with no trickle down. I'm kind of surprised there isn't a gofundme to operate on Jimothy to make him "normal".

But you know - it beats reading about you know who.

Be careful Jimothy. The internet loves to tear down what it builds up.

*I had no song with the word "Jimothy"  - though there are songs, by name, about him on iTunes. Seriously. Americana, Rap, Irish jigs, hard rock and hardcore punk.

Deer Dance

I don't think deer usually kill humans, but...........never say never.

This gal, yesterday, intersected Shep and myself as we went on a morning walk. It was in the middle of the street and it just took me by surprise. Neither Shep nor I saw her until she was right there!  She was not afraid at all. And within five feet of us.

Shep was so surprised he didn't even bark. So we just hustled along and I sent 710 that pic.

Fast forward a couple of hours and we pull into the drive after a big hike with Shep. The deer is at our window on the left front of the house. As we pull closer in, she has got a fawn with her. A very small one.

We get stared down as we open the gate and drive in. Shep, oddly, is oblivious.

I go in the house and see the mom and baby in our beds at the other end of the house. The baby can barely stand and walk. I'm guessing it is a day or two old - tops. Cute as fuck though.  It eventually lays down in the ground cover and is so small you can barely see the tips of its ears.

Fast forward a few more hours. We take Shep for his evening walk. The deer are nowhere in our front yard, so we assumed they moved on.

WRONG.

We get to the end of the drive and onto our sidewalk and the mom shows up from around the far side of our house. And she is protective. Fiercely so.

It's not enough we kept moving. She starts to follow us.

It's not enough we cross the street and pick up the pace. So does she.

We stop. She stops. But at too close a distance for my liking. She doesn't look big, but I'm guessing she weighs 710 and my poundage combined. And she can charge should she want.

Just then we see a young woman (19 ish) walking  her dog on the other side of the street towards us, the side with our house and the baby. We yell out to her about a baby deer, and she sees "our" deer and goes "awwww".  I'm like, "no, she is protecting her baby".

Just as I say that, the deer sets her sights on this woman and starts chasing her. Mind you, the woman never ever ever got off her phone. She's dragging the dog and running. Shep is all in arms, mostly at the other dog, and you'd think his ferocious bark would scare the deer.  Nope.  Not even a little.

The three humans and two dogs make it to the end of the street, us going across the perpendicular street, the woman around the corner. Finally mom stops chasing and watches all of us. Then turns and runs fast as she can, turning back into our yard and to her kid.

I can't say I'm thrilled about being stalked. But that said, I'm ok providing a place for this baby to get strong so they can move on. At least I hope they don't make it their permanent residence.

I'm sure watching me wheel out the trash a little later was hilarious. I'm walking backwards when I can or looking over my shoulder the entire time.

Later, as I was cooking dinner, 710 saw them in our next door neighbor's yard.

She's gonna kill us.

Cunt

CUNT !!!!!

I'd like to leave that there alone, but historical purposes:  this is Kristi Noem, governor of South Dakota.

She shot and killed her puppy because she deemed him untrainable.

Didn't give him to a shelter. Didn't attempt to rehome him.

SHOT HIM.  Dead.

She is a grade A cunt. Or is it grade Z.  Whichever the worst is. Honestly, if there is a worse word, please let me know. This woman is an insult to cunts everywhere to be lumped into their grouping.

I hope the same fate awaits her.  I stand by that statement.

I'd make the font on my first line bigger if I could. But it's as large as Blogger allows.

Tusk

It's becoming more and more official - there is less and less for 710 and myself to explore in DC that we have not done before.

Yes, museums change exhibits, but we've been to most - if not all of them.

Then the other things: Supreme Court - check.  Liberry of Congress - check. Capitol, OEOB, White House - check x3. National Archives?  Yeah. All of the war memorials and presidential ones too.

We've even done Walter Reed's museum of medical oddities.

This isn't a bad thing. And normally we are fine just walking and exploring. It's just hard to do at 94 degrees and in a heavy plastic boot (though in our last day, I did make it 8 miles of walking in that thing).

The one things we had not done was the National Zoo. I wanted to go, but mostly just for the pandas. Well, only for the pandas.

I find zoos to be D-pressing.

Caged animals just seems cruel to me. And the DC one was no different. Yeah, I get some animals it keeps them safe from being extinct or poached. The above elephant was extremely regal. Those tusks were impressive and no doubt would have been stolen from him if out in the wild.

The teeny size of the Zebra enclosure was horrific to me. Then I got to see that it abutted the cheetah one, while slightly bigger, could NEVER let a cheetah remotely get to their running speed. Add to that, the cat hung at the back fence, right next to where the zebra was housed.

The orangutans at least had the ability to climb towers and swing part way across the park to another enclosure - though we didn't actually get to see that.

But we did get to see the pandas.

This exhibit wasn't nearly as crowded as one might think, but the entire zoo wasn't either at first. I get that they're giant pandas, but they still seemed huge to me.

This guy was impressive too.

This is what I truly expected to see for most of the animals on a day in the 90s. Sleeping. These two lions took advantage of the sun and just napped.

I was thinking that maybe it best if this lady didn't actually frequent zoos.

The zoo might have been the last Smithsonian thing we had left to do in DC - and we did the Cooper Hewitt one in NYC a few years back.

Granted, we'll be back. We love DC. But now we can just take our time and wander even more than we have.

She's Always In My Hair

It's a quick down and dirty animal posting today.

Sophie: not being amused.

Boomer - at my mother's last week, going chair to chair for love. And getting it.

Pippa getting a brush out.  This much fur could come off her every single day.

Do They Know It's Christmas?

It's the holidays and Petey Porn and Sophie Smut is going global.

I'm taking people's doggie shots (without really asking all of them) to show the cuteness worldwide. Everyone has been so loving to see Petey, Sophie, and now Buddy, that I thought I'd return some of the favour so you could see other people's four-legged friends.

I already apologize to those whom I did not get to include this year. But I'm sure I'll be doing it again.

We lavish upon our pets this time of the year. Who doesn't get a little stocking of treats for their furry pals? They don't even know why - but that's ok. They deserve it.

So....let's start the show......shall we?

My man, Ted.
Ok, he's David's man, Ted. But he's just the frickin' cutest.
I can never get enough Teddie.

Holiday foster-to-adopted pup, Nila.  Orlando, FL.
She belongs to my friend Kristin.

Scooter.
Boston buddy to John (and Jim and Zachary).
Though apparently John doesn't have anything to say - regardless of his blog title.

Harley & Holden.  These are puppies, btw.
Boys to (the other) Brett & Nico.
Petey met his first Rhodesian Ridgeback the other day. Keggers. They got along great.

Who's a good boy?  WHO'S a good boy?
Georgie is a good boy.  (ala Richard and Serge)

Sabine & Remy.
Two cute girls of Jon & Tommy down in NC.

Becky & Andrew's dog - Barkley.
Better behaved than one would think. He's a cutie and quite the cuddler.
Careful if you don't behave in that house. It's curtains for you. Lacey, gently wafting curtains...but curtains nonetheless.

Morty & George's boys - Skeeter & Logan.
Petey loves being part of a pack with these two.
I always wondered if Petey knows or cares that these two are the same breed.

Buddy.  Getting bigger each week.
And a getting a lot more comfortable too. She's a lot of fun during visits to my mom's house.

Rollo, London, and THE man, Ripley.
There are Meredity & Norman's brood.  (Rollo is not even a year old yet.)

This is Phoebe. Christopher's owner.
Apparently CB drives a Volvo....or likes Prince.

Otis.  My main man.
See, that's from Animal House

Otis, is from a much nicer house with guys who drink slightly less than John Belushi.

But look at those eyes!!!!!!

You'll see Petey and Sophie pics from the holidays. They always get their turn to shine, so I felt it necessary to keep the spotlight on these fun and funny guys.

Insider

I got nothing.

Yesterday was a home day - I never left it.  I stayed inside all day long. I skipped yoga and, if I must be honest, never got out of my fuzzy bear pants.

I didn't even take Petey for a walk - 710 did those, g-d love him.

It was cold. It poured all day long. And the reality was - I didn't want to leave Petey, though he's doing much better.

His coughing has pretty much subsided. He's eating pretty well and taking his meds. He finally pooped (trust me, that was a big thing this and last time he had pneumonia).  He's not taking in much fluid, so he's getting wet food and we're even adding water to that (710's brilliant idea), so we're tricking him into drinking.

Sophie goes over and checks on him several times per day - so she just might get that RN license after all.

Anyhoo - it was just a day for nesting and I had nice long nap. We all did and all within about 30 square feet.

Here Are Many Wild Animals

I mentioned a few months back that our 'hood had wild turkeys.

Apparently they are back. Maybe they never left, but if not, they've been keeping it on the DL.

Neighbors said they saw three together.  I've seen them a bunch over the last few weeks, but always two at a time. Never three.  Maybe our neighbor needs new glasses.  Even when she got a picture it was only two.

However, the image you see is mine from yesterday.

On coming back from our walk, Petey was very animated as we trotted up the drive.  There they were, in the middle of the yard. He wanted to go at them, but I was having none of it.  I don't know how wild wild turkeys are.  They ain't small, that's for sure.

As they walked around our two large maples, I watched the squirrels trying to approach the trees, but too afraid to get near these things. I have no idea what wild turkeys eat, but I'm guessing not squirrels.

The squirrels actually made the turkeys flap their wings, but I think they be flightless birds. Still the flapping got the squirrels to run, so it is a defense mechanism. I would have no idea what Petey would try to do to these guys, or vice versa - and I wasn't finding out.

I did go back out and try to capture video, but they went down the hill, on foot, fairly quick. I barely got this still shot.

Of course, if they charged me, I didn't know what I would even do.

Run like a girl, I suppose. Though not in Birkenstocks. They'd catch up to me and kill me.

Dog New Tricks

I'd like to go on record to say I'm the best brother.......ever.

That might be a bit of an exaggeration, since I have never, or probably will ever, donate a kidney or bone marrow to any of my sisters, but if they ask me to pick up their dogs, I'm more than willing to go out of my way for those canine cuties.

One of my many sisters was out of town and axed me to check on the doggies.  She never mentioned the cats.   At one point, I was going to sleep over in case Petey was still sick - he wasn't.  Or not enough so that it was necessary for me to temporarily move out the way-suburbs to tend to him and them.

We made the trek out and they were very very happy to see us.

I love Petey - and I shouldn't say this, but he is my favourite.  Not just of their current dogs, but any dog they've had. He's my buddy.

Boomer, whom you see here, is certainly quite the cutie and he ranks up there, but he was a distracted puppy.  Doggie ADHD.

Now into his fifth year, he's calmed down quite a bit.  A Miniature Australian Shepard, he is smart as a whip.  He not only knows how to open screen doors, he's figured out the sliding glass door and the actual doors with knobs on them too.  He has also taught Petey how to do most of those things.

He's gotten smarter about not herding cars and getting a paw run over.  Crazy dog.

The pooch also eats the head off of every flower he's ever seen and literally eaten his water bowl.  Weirdo.

But as time goes on, he's become a little more attentive and loving. He's always been that way with my sister, but now with others, he likes to hang out and take pets.  He's not big on giving kisses though.  What's up with that?  I love doggie kisses.

A year or so ago, one would have never been able to get a picture of Boomer with some body.  Now, he sat and kind of posed with me.

Yes, I've already been taken to task for 'not smiling' in my pictures.  Suck it.  I'm over that comment.  I'm happy.  You've heard it before, you'll hear it again:  I look Asian in pictures when I smile.  It's not a good look for me.

Anyways, when I'm with the dogs I'm smiling.  Inside.  Where it counts.

After the Flood

It's official.  As of 18:19 yesterday, Cleveland broke the all time precipitation record. Since it rained most of yesterday, we surpassed 53.84 inches of rain - and it's still raining.  Well, it is as of this drafting.

....and we still have two more months to go before the end of the year.  Oh, this record is going to be hard to beat.  Hell, this last one stood for 140 years.  With climate change, this new one might only last 2-3 years, tops.

But with going with the flood theme, let's turn to the Ark.  So, they weren't two-by-two, but this story of the released exotic animals in Ohio is certainly the way we like to get on the national news.  It is a horrible tale (ha! tail!!!, get it?) of a man collecting wild animals, letting them go and then killing himself.

I don't give a crap that he killed himself.  Call me heartless.  But if he was going to off-himself, why let all his animals out knowing what their fate would end up being?

I cannot really blame animal control or the police force for not being able to handle lions and tigers and bears.   Yes......oh my.  Being a gay man, I'm contractually obligated to say the 'oh my' part.  Anyways, there was no rounding them up and finding new homes or zoos for them.  It was frickin' Zanesville, Ohio - home of nothing.

So here is what ended up happening, and I'm not happy to show it.

Absolutely HORRIBLE.   Spoiler Alert: they're not sleeping.

This is even worse than Evan Almighty - and let me tell you that was possibly now the second worse thing I've seen that includes animals.

See how I bring it together?  Floods, Animals. Arks.  I'm good!

On another note, I had a nice lunch with my cousins, Bill & David yesterday.   David axed if any new features were coming up in my blog-world.  Ummmm......no.

He suggested 710 and I get a house-boy so I have something to write about.  If I got a house-boy, I'd get a dog too.  I mean, why walk and clean up after the dog if I have a house-boy?   Fuck - he can do it.

Superball

Ugh - yet another Super Bowl.

Can I even begin to tell you how little I care about this event? Actually, I can't. There are no words to describe my lack of interest.

I'm not sure Ben Roethlisberger has looked this good in a long time anyways. I don't mind that he plays for the Steelers, I don't even mind his exonerated rape charges. Yes, multiple.

I just can't get over how many fake teeth he probably has from his motorcycle accident a few years ago.

I'll probably watch the Puppy Bowl VII. I'm looking for Max to take the MVP. How can he not? He 'loves show tunes'.

...and how many more aging rock "stars" do we have to see piddle their way through a performance - if anything is plugged in to begin with. Yeah Pete Townsend, I'm talkin' to you!

I don't see the need to sit through the Super Bowl for the commercials anymore - they're out there anyway. Thank you internets. No reason to sit through football for commercials that are usually overrated anyways.

That being said, I am loving the new VW Passat ad. Yeah, I am a Star Wars geek - but you know that by now. Maybe you'll love it, maybe not.

I love the way the Lil Vader's cape flows behind him. I love his "eyes" at the end. I'm not sure how the look he gives make the eyes almost look expressive. But I like how the dad raises his eyebrow too. Congrats to Geo Lucas and John Williams for allowing this to happen.

Since I've already seen this ad, why turn on the Uber-bowl at all? I shant. I shant.

Older

We are still in Columbus and I think the underlying theme of the weekend is: we're getting older.

I know - alert the media.

Much of our weekend with long-time friends has revolved around work, potential retirement (when, if, where, etc), and health. Granted, we've done it with laughs and memories, but we all realize this is on our horizon.

We now watch what we eat and when, because our bodies react differently than they did before. I can only speak of me when I say my beer consumption was less than it used to be and I was the first to excuse myself to go to bed - you know, because it was 23:00 and it was past my bedtime.

It was not lost on me that this was the group of folks I used to meet UP with starting at 23:00 to go out for most of the night. Beer consumption was at least twice of what I did last night. Time marches on.

There was some sitcom that I'm blanking on where the guy said he now had to get up in the middle of the night to pee. An older friend said, "at least you remember to get up to do it". I'm not quite in the former category, but how far off can it be?

It is always great being with these guys though. And since it seems I've wallowed a little here, I'll provide pics - just for fun.

This is Skeeter. He loves me. But he just loves. He's such a good boy. There were two night of fireworks while we were here and he ran to me both times for protection and pets - both of which I was happy to give. He has a brother, Logan, who is so nice, but so painfully shy almost - I didn't get to love him as much.

Brutie looks angry but he is one big love cat. He loves constant attention, and I was happy to give it to him. He is so handsome and I love his white muzzle. He looks big but he's all fur. He is actually pretty light.

And since I'm such a sucker for animals, they know it. I didn't get Logan on me, but Skeeter and Brutie were on me like white on rice. I cannot believe how Morty deprives them of affection!

I kid - that house is full of love for these guys, but hey, if they can find more, they seek it out. They're kind of whores for pets and kisses.

The Littlest Birds

I have a bird buddy. ...yes, that sounds as odd typing it as it does reading it.

For the last few weeks, whenever I cut the lawn I have a robin who comes out of nowhere and follows me around. Weird, right?

The first time it was just kind of cute. He'd (I'm assuming it's male due to his colouring) hop around, just following me, or a little bit in front of the mower. He'd never fly away and maybe just bop
to the side if I got too close.

Then it happened again and again. Each and every time I would mow the yard he'd show up and the pattern would be the same. So far he hasn't missed a time.

Yes, I am assuming it is the same bird. I haven't had multiple ones show and since the pattern is always the same, I'm just guessing we've got a thing............goin' on. Maybe I'll call him "Mrs. Jones".

Yesterday was no exception. I had cut about half the yard before he showed up. But show up he did. And like clockwork, he just followed me around, watching me and and checking me out.

I don't get his game. Do I uncover grubs or worms or something? Do I make it easier for him to go eat or provide for his family?

Either way I kind of like it. I like the routine or the unknown buddy-system we seem to have. I get nothing out of it other than a smile, but I'm assuming he gets something too - whatever that might be.

So Happy Birthday

I'm traveling today and will not be home for Sophie's 4th birthday.

Oh - she looks all sweet and innocent here, and she is about 87% good, but that 13% evil....mostly just to her poor sister.

She is smart as all get-out though. I have never seen a cat with so many problem-solving skillsm though most of them involve stalking, strking and bouncing. These skills work to her advantage, but not necessarily to Denton's and mine. Her brain is always going. Thank g-d she has no opposable thumb or we'd be screwed. There aren't many doors or cabinets she hasn't figured out. Let's not discuss the unwiring of our security system.

Soph is also the most affectionate cat we have ever had. The folks at Rescue Village really nurtured their temporary residents with lots of love and socialization. That has worked to our advantage.

We haven't had her for four years......yet, but she was born four years ago today....so says her papers.

We'll celebrate with wet food when I get home.

Here's just a parting shot of her. She can really sleep anywhere in any position. ...as you can clearly see.

My Shit is Fucked Up

This is a post mainly for Torn and Morty. They are the two most poop-centric folks I know.

So, I was driving back from the gym the other day and actually listening to commercial radio (shut up, I know!), when an ad for the Cleveland Zoo comes on. I don't know what captured my attention to said commercial, but I will venture it was the use of the word 'poop'. One does just not hear that word in radio ads much.....or at all.

One of the zoo's attractions this summer is a program called the Scoop on Poop. It truly is an educational program that has exhibits like 'Turd Trivia' and 'Who Dung It?'.

You can also go to Stool School where visitors can "hop on a scale to see how long it’d take an elephant to defecate their body weight." I know you've always wondered - now you can find out and finally get that full night of rest that has been plaguing you for years!

It is totally not lost on me that tSoP is being co-sponsored by the Northeast Ohio Sewer District. It is a great tie-in and I love that both the zoo and the sewer district went with it.

And while both Morty and Torn could be visiting guest lecturers at the zoo, Becca will be happy to know that this entire summer program is based on a book by one Dr. Wayne Lynch from.........wait for it....wait for it.....wait for it.........Clyde Peeling's Reptiland (no, that last word is not a typo).

At Halloween, the Metroparks does Boo at the Zoo. You'd think this year they'd do Poo at the Zoo.

I truly wish I could find the radio ad to post on-line, it is both hilarious and clever. As the copy goes, the Scoop on Poop might not the the first reason to go to the zoo, but it is Number Two.

Shadows

Ahh today. The "holiday" which actually has less meaning than say, Arbor Day. At least I'm all for trees.

I'm sure I could wiki it, but I'm too lazy to really care. It won't stop me from asking the question though:

How the HELL did this come to be? Groundhog Day, that is. PUHL-EESE (say it like Squidward!)

Having an over-grown rodent predict the end of winter and/or if we'll have more of it.

OF COURSE, we'll have more of it. You're in frickin' Pennsylvania in early February. Guess what? You're going to have more winter. A lot more. Not six more weeks. Try 12.

The only thing this day did bring that was good - was the movie of the same name.

C'mon, yeah it's a little lot sophomoric, but it totally works - even with Andie MacDowell. So in fact, the day is not a total loss, because you can expect that some cable station will be playing this over and over and over today.

Do-Ri-Me

It seems we're home to a deer.

Usually I see them travel in twos or threes, so this guy (or gal) is all alone. (S)he sleeps either in front of that stone wall, or sometimes behind for cover, I suppose.

We assume it came from down in the ravine (which is across three lanes of very very busy traffic), where there has to be plenty to eat, but maybe it's not the right stuff.

Apparently what is, is all our new plantings. Hostas, Dogwood blooms, Hydrangeas. It's problematic to say the least. I want him/her to be safe, and it's great we provide that safe haven, but I don't want to feed them our expensive pants either.

Up close(r) he/she is so cute....and really notices our every move - even when we're in the house and well behind glass and closed windows and doors.

We've sprayed stuff on the plants that is deer repellent: Deer B Gone, or something like that. It has garlic and cayenne pepper in it. Other stuff too. We'll see if it keeps (s)him away.

UPDATE: Oh - it is a she. As I sit here and type this, she is out there with a baby standing under her, nursing. The baby is so cute!!! How can I possibly kick this little guy out? Not that I would know how to get rid of them in the first place.

Hopefully they just need a safe haven until junior gets a little bigger and they'll be on their way. Maybe in a week or so?

Dog New Tricks

This is one of the cutest ads I've seen in a while. Of course, I have a huge soft spot for doggies and kitties.

I love how they can show emotion, or edited to seem like they can (but I believe they can).

I don't care that the commercial is for an investment firm. I like how in one minute it can tug at my heart strings for sadness and love.

It's just a fun Monday morning video to kick off the week. Enjoy.

dogs

I guess I could have done 'who let the dogs out' - but I don't own that song, nor have I really ever heard the entire thing either. Is there anything else to it but that g-d awful chorus?

I came home from workout Sunday to find this in our yard:

....two big mutts in our yard. Asleep. I'm taking these from about 100 yards away - so they're much bigger up closer. Not that I got that close.

this guy (?) is mostly Mastiff. Big feller - or lady. Especially when he/she stood up.

This one was of an unknown breed. I'd suspect 100% mutt. But it was one mean doggie.

I love dogs. I get in trouble by getting on their level, whether they like it or not. Normally they do, but now and again it comes back to bite me. Literally.

These dogs I knew better than to go, 'oh what a cuuuuuuuuute doggie!!!!!!'.

For the last few years we've had a pack of wild dogs roam the 'hood. Nasty dogs. Ones that kill every living animal they come across - smaller dogs, cats, bunnies and squirrels (say like Veruca Salt). I don't care about the squirrels, except that they leave part of the dead carcass in our yard somewhere.

Two years ago there were four dogs. Last year five. This year looks like two.

But when I got out of the car, they awoke. If you've seen Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - you might remember when Sirius Black showed up early on as a dog, growling and snarling? Remember that?

Sirius was a cute little puppy compared to this black dog. I can deal with barking. The growling and snarling was a bit disconcerting. The charging at me? I did not like one little bit.

I ran like a little girl into the garage and hit the button to shut the door.

All I could think of is that I'd get bitten and have to get the rabies shots, since they'd never catch these dogs.

Two years ago I complained to animal control. They knew all about them but can't do anything about them. They've set traps and can't catch them. Or when you call them, by the time get there the dogs are long gone.

Mr. Mastiff got up and ambled away and the black pooch followed....but not before taking a leak on some of our new plants.
