Hallelujah Chorus

I can't say I'm a huge fan of Handel. I'm not a fan of Jebus either.....or even the holiday today, at least the religious aspect of it.

I do like the Roches though. A folk trio made of sisters Maggie, Terre and Suzzy, they made their name doing a capella work, starting in the late '70s. Maybe earlier. One of their trademarks is doing the "Hallelujah Chorus" from Handel's Messiah.

I remember seeing them do it on SNL back in the '70s. I also saw them do it in the '80s, at a live concert.

This clip is not the best. Taken from 1982, the quality is exactly what you expect from almost 30 years ago. But you can see their potential. (I do love that the clip misspells how to spell their last name/group name.)
Take the artistry from the clip, if not the religious overtones.

Have a great holiday. I'm sure I'll be posting over the next few days of ours. But please enjoy yours.

Mentioning Handel, did you know that there's a growing body of thought that he MAY have been gay? There is no actual positive evidence for this but, bearing in mind that in his day in England all homosexuality was a capital offence, and coupled with his acquaintanceship with royalty, there would not likely have been any. The supposition arises from 'joining up the dots' from what we know about his bachelor life, with no evidence of his having had any affairs with women at all (let alone men). Of course all this may be entirely wishful thinking but all the same it is quite amusing to see the reaction of religious zealots to the suggestion, as though such a gifted man (certainly one of my own top 5 composers) could have written such universally popular religious music and been GAY! Oh, the horror of the thought! Impossible!

Enjoy the rest of the hols!
