My Music Monday

More new music.

Everything on paper would make today's selection a winner. I don't know from Allison Russell, but a song on a banjo (yeah, don't that deter you at all) and a duet with Annie Lennox?  You'd figure it was one of the more unique selections out there.

And in a way "Superlover" is.

In a way it's missing something.

The song is an appeal for kindness and empathy, as opposed to violence and cruelty. So I'd like to think we can all appreciate the message. At least the folks who read my blog, that is.

The banjo is not played like you'd think and it's well done. For a while it is the only instrument used and the others are extremely subtle - and allegedly played by Wendy & Lisa (formerly of the Revolution) who are rumoured to be producing Lennox's next album.

I think part of the missing piece is Lennox herself. She used but I'm not sure it's wisely enough. It is her first appearance on any record in over seven years. Annie does a fine job with what she's given.

The performances of both artists are extremely well done. The song just doesn't grab me like I think it should. But that's just one blogger's opinion.

I mean, I'm always going to click on something that says "Anniex Lennox".  Right?  And it gets an A for being a bit more unique than most anything out there.

the Gnome

Let's face it - gnomes are creepy ceramic clowns.

Wallace & Gromit's new movie, Vengeance Most Fowl uses that creepiness to full effect.

I wanted to vote for this for best animation for the last Oscar race, but I knew it wouldn't win.

While still expertly crafted and Gromit is the epitome of a very expressive pooch - for being claymation - the stories, in my opinion. work best as shorts. .....though Curse of the Were-Rabbit easily stands on its own.

So many of W&G storylines are similar: miscommunication; Wallace in trouble; Wallace not believing Gromit, etc.

And all of them - even the shorts - ending in a chase scene.

That said, the chase scenes are usually great and inventive. This is no exception. With this film, story and consequences there is a case to be made here for people who are pushing AI. They'll totally miss it, should they ever see it.

And if for nothing else, Fowl has the return of Feathers McGraw.

Going Home

As you might imagine, we are a bit Simon heavy this week. I mean, he has a new home and all, and he will be making regular appearances here, but.......he was the star this week.

Simon's last known butler's pantry butt-on-counter scenario.

710 usually drops Shep at daycare, but I had to a few times this last week.
To assuage my guilt, we stopped at a park for a long walk before drop-off.

Loves living on the edge.

Pick-up. And I was greeted by neighbor dog, Harriet the Bassett.

What Shep lacks in tact, he makes up for in comfort.

Simon's last pic at our house. He knew shit was going down, but wasn't sure what it might be.
He was a little freaked out.

Shep made the daycare feed.
He looks HUGE here, and it looks like the entire pic is bad photoshop.

Simon's new home. This is where he hid for hours, and where he was hiding when I wrote my post a few days back.

Shortly after the draft was finished, Simon made an appearance upstairs and seems very much at home.

My sister in law gave him a tour of the house 2-3 times. He just followed her everywhere, so he's getting better. But he seems on the road to getting back to normal.

Record of the Month

I figured I'd do a monthly 'what I'm listening to' kind of thing. This could be viewed as a lame placeholder kind of post. And probably it is. But it's my blog! So there!

Jason Isbell has a new disk out, minus his band, the 400 Unit. It is his first solo disk since 2015's Something More Than Free

Technically, this could be considered his only solo disk. On his two others, he utilized the talents of other musicians. On Foxes in the Snow, it is Isbell only. Acoustic guitar and vocal. The 11 songs recorded over five days.  That's it.

Call this album what you'd like: Roots music. Americana. Country. At times it is one of those things, or all of those things.

Whether this is Isbell's "divorce record" or not is probably up for debate. A song title like "Good While it Lasted" seems to point in that direction, but the lyrics don't really portray it. Of course everything could be wrapped up in metaphors for all I know. The themes of beginnings or endings seems to permeate the record.

Obviously, with one guitar and no backing vocals, this is as stripped down at music gets. Isbell is a gifted songwriter and guitarist, so it all works out - sonically.

The disk kicks off with "Bury Me" which is probably as country as the album gets, but I like it.  The guitar work on "Ride to Robert's" (which is a bar in Nashville - which I've been to) is amazing.

The title track is really good, possibly the best on the album. "True Believer" is up there too.

Isbell is a storyteller as much as he is a musician. He is stellar at both.

Foxes in the Snow isn't going to sell through radio play. There isn't anything commercial enough to play there. This will be for his fans and spread word of mouth. I get the genre isn't for everyone - but honestly, which one is?

Foxes is a good disk. While it's early in 2025, it is the best one of the year so far.

Changes

I have never outright stated it, but in posts you may have picked up on the fact that my sister-in-law was staying with us for a while.

And it was a while. But it was at my suggestion.

I do believe the move to the 216 was a good idea for her. And I think it has been. But since Q4 of last year, she has been looking at places of her own.

Two days ago, she moved out and into her own house, which is only like two miles away.

As with a lot of cities, the housing market here is turbulent. So many houses being sold before they are technically listed. It leaves buyers at a disadvantage most of the time. And many things going for above ask. Great for the seller; less so for the buyer.

Honestly, I'm glad the first few houses in which she was interested fell through. The one she got is adorable and the yard and 'hood are nice. It was the right house at the right time for the right person.

Personally, while it was my idea she come here and I love her, I'm glad she's gone. I think 710 is too.

It hasn't quite yet hit. I'd say 90% of her stuff is gone, so I know she'll be back to collect the rest. And it's only been like 18 hours as I write this, so things don't seem too different just yet.

710 is a g-dsend, of course. we let his sister live here for a long time, when I'm 99% sure I wouldn't let my own stay more than 48 hours. But now we have to get back to being a couple.

My husband has all these plans on what to do with our house now. I'm for it, but want to hold off. It's been a long time since it's just been us. While I don't think we are out of sorts in any regard really, I think acclimate as a twosome before we make any decisions on anything.

But due to all of this, there are changes for you guys as well.

She was with us when we got Simon. And as she was the one home with him 24/7, they are very bonded. So it was natural to all of us that Simon live with her.

This is fine. I liked Simon, but he and I never bonded at all. Simon and 710 did a bit, but not a lot. So we took him to his new home yesterday - where, as of this writing, he's still in hiding. That's to be expected.

I'm not sure if Shep will even have a reaction to Simon not being here. More to my SiL being gone than the cat, I'm sure. She was a sure thing for treats - so those are going to be in decline.

Rest assured, Simon will make appearances on Saturday. I'm 100% certain we will be getting a lot of weekly pictures of him at his new place. So, they will show up here.

We still might get a cat. It's one of those decisions we need to wait a few weeks on until we are centered.

This is the big update of the week. Possibly of the year.

War Plans

I'd like to say I got nothing, but Pete Hegseth is making that very very difficult.

One does not have to pick up a paper to see what a fucktard he's been. I do gotta appreciate the Atlantic reporter who just put it all out there about a fucking group text chat regarding war plans on Yemen.

If I'm being totally honest, I had / have no idea the US had / have any beef with Yemen. See? not reading the news isn't so bad.

My beef is the fucking social media posts that say: "I don't want to hear one more word about her emails" - in reference to Hilary Clinton's unsecured emails from a decade ago.

To those posters:  SHUT THE FUCK UP.

No one - and I mean no one - has brought that up since BLOTUS won 2016. If that is our (read: democrats) best response, it is no wonder we lose so g-damn often.

Others have mentioned that Hegseth should be fired. In this administration it is almost certain he'll get a promotion out of this.

It's all just so fucked up and I don't believe this will change one thing. Depressing.

Cooking with Blobby

Apparently, any more with this blog, I'm just eating my feelings. I suppose there are worse ways to go.

I tried Ina Garten's Creamy Parmesan Garlic Beef Bowtie Pasta with moderate success. I followed almost everything to a T and it was fine, but something felt missing........besides the parsley* which I did not have.  ...at least to me. 710 loved it, which is good.

But let's get to it.

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef
1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
3 tablespoons butter
3 cups beef broth 8 oz Bowtie Pasta
1 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
3 cloves garlic, minced 1 cup heavy cream
1/2 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley (for garnish)

Instructions

1️⃣ Cook the Beef In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned. Drain excess grease, then stir in Worcestershire sauce and Italian seasoning. Remove the beef from the skillet and set aside.

2️⃣ Make the Sauce In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant (about 30 seconds). Pour in the beef broth and bring to a simmer.

3️⃣ Cook the Pasta Stir in the uncooked bowtie pasta and let it cook, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is tender and most of the liquid is absorbed (about 12–15 minutes).

4️⃣ Add the Cream & Cheese Reduce heat to low, then stir in the heavy cream, Parmesan cheese, salt, and black pepper. Add the cooked ground beef back into the skillet, stirring until well combined. Simmer for 2–3 minutes until the sauce thickens.

5️⃣ Serve & Enjoy Sprinkle with crushed red pepper flakes (if using) and garnish with fresh parsley. Serve warm and enjoy this creamy, cheesy, and delicious pasta dish!

The things I'd do differently would probably to cut back (or just cut) the Italian seasoning. It always tastes off to me in just about any dish. Oregano can overpower some stuff. And while I love red pepper flakes, I'd cut back on those a bit. Granted I probably added too many to start.

Again, the dish tasted fine. It's a little tough to cook the pasta in the 3 cups of beef broth. The pasta bordered on a little too al dente. It got better the longer is sat in the cream sauce.

But visually, I didn't love the dish. Ground beef, beef stock and cream - just makes GREY.  There is no way around that. Ina's pictures looked WAY better. How could they not.

710 would like it in our food rotation and I can live with that.

*I'm calling bullshit on the parsley lobby - or whomever controls them. Granted I don't make tons of dishes requiring it - or even for garnish. It comes in wildly huge bunches that I can't possibly use before it goes bad.

My Music Monday

Still with the new music. There just seems to be a lot of it out there now.

This time it's Djo

Yes. Joe - or a guy who had one to many study halls and lots of time to doodle in the margins of his Trapper Keeper.

"Basic Being Basic" is off his upcoming third disk. Apparently he's an actor too, but I've never even seen four seconds of Stranger Things, so I'm 100% sure I've never seen him in anything.

I suppose if he dances too, he'd be a triple threat.

"Basic" is ok. I already know it's not making my top 5 songs of 2025. His talk-singing at the beginning reminds me of most every song from the group Cake. That isn't a criticism, just an observation. That said, it is probably the part that drew me into the song.

Still, when he sing-sings, he has a hook with the chorus. It doesn't make me want to reach for the radio dial.

Half a Person

Ooooh - my first race for 2025.

I'm the one in the red hat, red shorts and red sleeves under the grey t-shirt.

It was a half of a half marathon.

Or, I guess a quarter of a marathon, but that doesn't sound as good.  6.55 miles.

500-ish participants. I landed at 195 coming in. I can live with that I suppose. Like I have a choice.

It actually wasn't cold enough for a hat. We started out at 48°F which is too warm for hats or leggings of any kind. I did need the gloves, only because my hands are still freezing at those temps.

I was ok with my final pace, but not in the 'during' phase.

Lately, I'm not happy with my runs. The last week has been frustrating at best whether 3 miles or 11. I feel like I'm struggling more and more, though when I'm done my times are about where they should be. For yesterday, I was 33 seconds per mile faster than my norm - yet the run was a chore.

I know that with competitive runs your pace is almost always going to be quicker than a training run. It's just the environment. But all runs have left me questioning my goals.

Perhaps this is normal. It is for me.......but I'm not sure I want to be the benchmark.

I hit the bakery with two others in the Old Man's Running Group who ran with me - well, one was a good 2 minutes faster - and we were all too lazy to find our cars to take our medals there first. So standing in line some woman comes up to us and asks us what the run was for (yes, she ended it in a preposition). Now a lot of runs are for some charity, but this one wasn't. I just thought or a second and go, "for our egos, I suppose".

She looked at me quizzically. But I made my two companions laugh. And the rest of the people from the group who were already at a table when Andrew relayed the story.   ....so I suppose, the race wasn't a loss.

Strut

It's another Saturday. More doggy and kitty pics.

the Great Squirrel Hunt continues.

Hanging.

a Fake Spring day at the local lake.  I took him on a morning walk before dropping him at daycare.

Kitler gets tuna water.

Now and then I get to see my friend Bob's dog, Olive.
I got to play with her current favourite toy, and hedgehog.

Pout. Put it Out.

Early daycare escape. I went to rescue Shep who was attacked by another dog.
Poor guy got his ear bit. He's mending ok.

23

Ugh.  23.

That is the number of years as this blog has existed. It seems a little unfathomable......yet there it is.

I do not do a lot of vlogs and with good reason. More power to the people who think they should be in front of the camera. Sitting behind a keyboard is good enough for me.  ....and even that might be too much....for everybody.

Still, here we are. Two plus decades in.

That said, "enjoy" the vlog.

Ad of the Month

Maybe it's just me, but who doesn't love Pedro Pascal?

No offense to 710, but given the opportunity, he'd be my hall pass. Hands down.

He's done a new ad for Apple AirPods, which was directed by Spike Jonze.

You might know Spike as the guy who directed the Fatboy Slim video with Christopher Walken dancing. Jonze also did vides for Weezer and Björk, along with a number of other artists. He's also helmed a few major motion pictures as well.

Pedro dances too. Maybe it is just my on-line feed, but I see a lot of Pascal dancing, and he can move. Whether he has formal training seems like a few web searches I'm not really willing to do.

The Apple ad is clearly for on-line only, as it clocks in at over five minutes. It's interesting enough visually, but like most ads, it's not making me go out and purchase anything.

Cooking with Blobby

Quesadillas. Sheet-pan at that.

You know, I kind of do easy recipes, right? But honestly, unless you're doing Beef Wellington or Boeuf Bourguignon, it's all pretty easy. Even the Boeuf thing is just stew, so it might be time consuming but probably not difficult.

And Mexican food can be pretty simple.

These quesadillas were. And it's kind of versatile. Below is the recipe, but you can gussy them up as you'd like. It's hard to strip them down anymore than they are. The main blog pic looks like a lot of ingredients, but most of those are topping to serve with the dish after it's made. Should you want those extras.

It's a great vegetarian option, as these had no meat. There is cheese, so this isn't vegan, though you could with some whatever fake cheese is.

I made one HUGE blunder with these. I'm bad at spatial recognition. The recipe is kind of for 6 quesadillas. For whatever reason, I thought the ones I normally buy - 8 inch - would fit on one sheet-pan. You can fit two. So we just had bigger serving sizes. And we ended up making two each.

Ingredients

Yield: 6 quesadillas

1 tablespoon avocado or canola oil 6flour tortillas (5 to 6 inches)
2 cups/8 ounces shredded Mexican cheese blend, pepper Jack or mozzarella cheese
Chipotle chile powder, gochugaru, Aleppo pepper or smoked paprika (not all - just one)
1 cup fresh or frozen corn kernels (optional)
Salt
Any combination of sliced avocado, diced white onion, diced jalapeño, chopped cilantro*, lime wedges, sour cream, salsa and hot sauce, for serving (optional)

 * cilantro is never an option.

Preparation

Step 1 Heat oven to 425 degrees.

Step 2 Add the oil to a large sheet pan and use a single tortilla to smear the oil around. Add the remaining tortillas, spacing them out evenly. Divide the cheese among the tortillas, then sprinkle with as much chile powder as you’d like. Top with the corn, if using.

I used corn. It turns out 710 isn't wild about corn in his food (though he'll eat it separately). After 40 years, I guess you can still learn something new about your long term partner. We also used diced jalapeño.

In retrospect I would have placed the cheese and stuff more to one side for easier folding. Live and learn.

Step 3 Bake the quesadillas until the cheese is melted, 5 minutes, then remove the pan from the oven. Using a spatula, fold each tortilla over itself to make half moons. Sprinkle with salt and return to the oven until crispy and lightly browned at the edges, 3 to 5 minutes.

I forgot to sprinkle salt on them. There was no harm in not doing it. All was fine.

Step 4 Serve immediately with any desired toppings.

We sliced each quesadilla into three sections for easer serving. The lime was great and how can you go bad with sour cream and avocado.

As I said we had two each, and it was ok, but I wasn't full full. Maybe it's the lack of protein in them. It seems more of snack food or an appetizer. They were great, but it wasn't quite "dinner", though it was that night.

The oil and the baking made the tortillas crisp, which was really nice. I'm sure we'll do these again.

My Music Monday

I've been a fan of Suzanne Vega for a few decades. Maybe four, if I chip away at that.

Like any artist, she has her highs and lows. Starting as a folk artist, she branched out here and there - but in reality most people know her for her hit "Luka" from 1987's album Solitude Standing, which also contained her song "Tom's Diner" was used by a UK dance production team called DNA.

Honestly, if I never hear that latter song again, I'm ok. Vega has much better material. And her truly branched out material, 99.9F° and Nine Objects of Desire both produced by her then husband are good. Nine Objects I'm guessing would be up in the top 50 of my all time favourite albums.

Vega has her first new disk coming out in May, Flying with Angels. "Speakers' Corner" is maybe the first release from the disk.

It's fine. It's a bit banal. She's done this before - or something too similar, that is. She's capable of more and can be much more interesting. Maybe this is the safe track to dole out to the public. I'll hold off to hear the rest of the disk in a few months.

All About the Bass

I'm attempting to get us to see movies this year. We REALLY fell down this last year - partially to me not wanting to socialize or my anxiety about going out.

But that's not an excuse for not seeing movies at home, I suppose.

So, I'm downgrading our goal for the year - since our first one is in the third month or 2025.  And it is a documentary short at that.

Yes, I'm really downplaying all of this.

It's exactly what it sounds like - kind of.

In 1968 Orin O'Brien became the first full time female member of New York Philharmonic playing the double bass.

Her niece, the filmmaker, touches on some of the bumps she encountered being the first - but it's basically superficial. Yes, there are some derogatory from Zubin Mehta and a few anecdotes, but doesn't really delve into much of anything.

And it seems it is not easy to interview a woman who doesn't seem that interested in telling her story. She never liked being the center of attention, so making a documentary seems short sighted. I'm not sure the niece is that good of a filmmaker.

The piece had great potential, and it just seems wasted.

I totally get why I lost this category at the Oscars this year. I get why they did too.

I mean, it's fine. It's harmless, but it has no teeth.

Waiting on a Friend

A well curated collection today - or at least admirable. Just not as extensive as some weeks.

710 took and sent to me.
He didn't even notice the shadows on Shep, which at first I thought might be a blanket.

Danger Zone.
Shep's bed, which we use as his toy chest. Either way.........playing with fire.

Shep can tell time on the weekends.  ....and he'll wait.
He will tell me when it's noon and he's ready for a car ride and park time.

Hangin'.

Possibly one of the best pics I've taken of the man.
I love this shot.  710 made it his screen shot on his iPhone.

Site of the Month

Eagles!

And not the Philadelphia kind either. The big birds. Like the one Coward BLOTUS ducked away from his first term.

No - there is a live webcam on two eagles in California.

There some very well positioned cams - and high quality at that - which have been monitoring a male and female bald eagle couple.

Shadow and Jackie now have three new chicks.  .....not that you might be able to see them today, but more on that in a second.

This webcam has shown the actual hatching of all three chicks. Egrets?

Allegedly, usually they only have two and if there are more, historically the chicks will kill the third. I'm not sure if this bodes well for #3 as they were born 4-5 days after the first two.  Ahhhhh........nature.

As of this writing, there are allegedly still three.

I say allegedly, because the comments say so. But what has been a beautiful vista up until a day or so ago, has turned into a lot of snow in the San Bernadino mountains.

One of the two parents has been covering up the chicks to keep them warm and protected.

But when both parents are there, you get to see nature. Dad bringing home a fish and ripping it apart and both parents feeding the kids.

The webcam site is actually here on YouTube.  But there is a crude recap site that, if you scroll down, will tell you the activity of the days.

We don't obsessively watch, but we check in on them daily since about the time the babies were born.

It's something to do that isn't the destruction of this country.

12 of 12

So I'm doing my 179th 12 of 12.

Normally it is 12 pictures taken on the 12th of the month. Since I only post once per day, you get my images the following day. All pictures taken with my iPhone. Click images to enlarge, if you choose.

Created by Chad Darnell and picked up from, what I can tell, any number of random bloggers who then link back to him and vice versa. Chad is no longer doing this, nor is successor coordinating the linking of other 12 of 12'ers anymore.

03:38.  My first awake time.

03:58.  Since I was awake I did Spelling Bee. I didn't actually "share" until about 07:00, as sometimes I forget people are sleeping at 04:00 and don't want to know about my achievements.

06:40.  Husband points.
I made 710's lunch for him. I pack the tomatoes separately so they don't make the sandwich soggy.

07:35. Sun up.

07:50. Gym. It was weirdly empty.

10:26. Mid-morning snack and its detritus.

12:12. Popped over to the liberry to pick up a book on resereve .
Liked their little display.

Patronize your local libraries !!!

16:45. Doggy Daycare Pick-Up.
WHAT a bunch of cuties!

17:09. Subsequent daycare dog walk,
You'd think this dog would be wiped after nine hours at daycare, but he got a 1.1 mile walk.

17:40. Ugh. I hate folding and putting away laundry.

18:52. Fruit prep.
Someone has to prepare the strawberries for my morning mush. That someone? Me.

19:11. Dinner!  Bread and water!
Nah, we also had meatloaf and buttered noodles with parm.
