Martha, My Dear

I dunno, man.

Yay, that an 81 year old woman can score the cover of Sports Illustrated for anything - let alone being a swimsuit "model".

Yes, Martha looks great, but that was a team of plastic surgeons, stylists, make-up artists, airbrushers, fishing line, lighting technicians and Penn & Teller pulling tricks out of their hat.

I mean, she has the means (read: money) to be able to look like that, but let's face it, almost no other 81 year old can pull that off - even with the crew listed above.

So, after 50 years, SI is dodging the annual criticism of porn on the newsstand, sold under the guise as "sport". Or propagating a body type that isn't possible for 99.9999999% of women.

In reality, the same can be said about Martha. 99.999999% of 81 year olds can't have a body like hers either, because they don't have a bank account like hers.

That said, I'm not sure SI is physically printed anymore, let alone on a newsstand - or even if newsstands still exist.

710 and I were discussing the cover yesterday on our dog walk. With on-line porn, boys and men don't need to buy the swimsuit edition to jack-off to. And since it was like 78 degrees out, I then looked around and apologized if anyone had their windows open and heard what I said.

Since her prison stint and her PBS baking show, I'm pro-Martha. I don't really get high anymore, but her pairing with Snoop Dog on so many things just makes me laugh. I'm not saying Martha partakes, but you know - why not?

I don't know if SI or women think this is the advancing the gender needs or wants, and it won't generate Cheryl Tiegs sales (wow.........I think I just dated myself with that reference), but they're getting the media buzz. And that's what it's all about.

a Question of Time

And open blog post to SCROTUS:

You know - I just don't get it.  I truly do not.

Fake Time covers hanging at your golf courses.  The actual epitome of "fake news".  The one and possibly only thing you seem to be against..........though you perpetuate it at every single turn.

You're wise to label things "fake news". The alternative facts to that are "lies".   ...and it's a dangerous thing to have that thrown back in your face, but I'm calling it out:  You're a Liar.

Still.....back that fucking fake magazine cover.

WHY?

This is not rhetorical. I truly want to know why.

I get it - if you had one created, I'd almost say "it's whimsical". But no......you purposefully had someone go make multiple and had them have them hang those at your establishments. This really just lends itself to narcissism and an ego to match none.

This isn't a fake mock-up they do at Downtown Disney shop {yes, for the record, I have one of myself as a nun......I kid you not}.  For chrissakes.....you even have the barcode and a publication date.

What I truly do not get - yet I do:  You have been on the cover of Time.  ....and not just because of your candidacy and eventual "win". Hell, for some inexplicable reason, you were their "Person of the Year".

BTW:  Time?   Really?  Has that magazine even been that relevant since say, 1988?  There was no other publication more worthy - like say, Teen Beat, Le Monde or Marie Claire?

I will go on record, if you're gonna pick a Time cover, you should go with my favourite one of you:

BTW (again), this one isn't fake news. Its harsh reality.

Time Won't Let Me

Freshman year of college, I admittedly took Math 104 ......twice.

One could attribute that foible to me being bad at math.......which I kind of was, but equal part blame could be placed on excessive alcohol intake and my inability to make it to West Campus due to said alcohol intake.

The thing with math and me: I always got the concept of the subject..........after the test.

It was a cycle I had, and one in which I had an extremely hard time breaking. Looking back on it all, I suppose it was possible I had ADD or some such leaning disability. Tutors never seemed to help.

Anyhoooo........I always found it quite comical that I'm now in charge of tens of millions of dollars in budgets and that I base most of my day on certain statistics, in reports that I run, analyze and from which I base future growth and strategy.

Not only do I no longer have an aversion to mathematics and stats, but fully embrace it. And more importantly, I understand it.

The people at Time, seem to be me.........back in Mount Hall.....in 1981.  They don't grab the concept of percentages............or the word 'almost'.

Don't worry Time-folks. I eventually got it. You will too.

Like a Rolling Stone

I'd have used "Rape Me" by Nirvana for this post, but apparently I squandered that one back in 2009.

No worries. I got it covered.

On FB two days ago, I was taken to task for not being "respectful" to the victim or story of rape on campus that was covered oh so poorly in Rolling Stone's last issue.

I said nothing about the victim - respectful or otherwise - but commented that with Rolling Stone's clear fuck-up in "reporting" and that they named U2's newest disk 'Record of the Year', the magazine has lost all credibility.

And yes, I put "reporting" in quotes.

RS was once a decent magazine that actually covered political and social issues quiet well. Without them - right or wrong - you'd never have gotten the movie / story of Karen Silkwood. And even a few years ago the interview that brought down General McChrystal for talking smack about his Commander in Chief.

But they laid a big turd with this story. I will go on the record, I have not read it. Nor do I actually feel the need to now.

The author - I can't say reporter, because she didn't fully report - might have had some great facts and anecdotal evidence on rape culture on college campuses. There is no shortage of it, from the woman at Columbia carrying around the mattress on which she was raped until her rapist was expelled or from the NYT front page story of rape at Hobart and William Smith College.

But said author focused on a student at UVA. But at some point she just became a storyteller and not a reporter.

Underlying facts were just plain wrong - all given by the victim and never sourced as truth or not.

Let me clarify: I am not blaming the victim here.

Rape and assault horribly traumatic events. But the details conveyed (or at least printed) were just incorrect. Jackie may have been confused, as any trauma would leave you disoriented. But there was no party of the night in question or at the place in question. The physical layout of the fraternity house is not consistent with the incident reported. Even that it was a pledge event was incorrect, as it was at a time when there were would be no pledges.

None of these were checked out by RS's writer. And mostly at the request of the victim, as she didn't want to see any retaliation by having others interviewed.

And here lies the problem - at least with me: if you're going to go to print in a national magazine with a story on rape culture on campus, you better make sure you do your homework.

I would say if we've learned anything from invading Iraq in 2003, it would be for reporters and the public to not take whatever is handed to them as fact. Make no mistake, I'm not comparing Jackie to Cheney & Co.

I do fear the inaccuracy of reporting. Or of witnesses, in regards to the law. Here is Cleveland, we've had four people exonerated of a murder due to false accusations  - and the four spent between 25-39 years in prison.

RS's original retraction pretty much put the blame of the inconsistencies on Jackie. They updated that retraction to negate the earlier one, but the damage was done.

Now, a magazine article is not a court of law, though many will be happy to try to determine guilt or innocence without a judge or jury. But it is unclear how much damage this article might do for campus rape discussions.

Granted, right now folks are talking, but more about Rolling Stone than the bigger picture. Rapes are incredibly prevalent on many a campus. Women are under reporting them and administrations are horribly guilty of admitting they happen, as they affect enrollment and the giving of alumni funds.

My wish is that this sham of an article pushes the agenda forward anyways. I'm not sure how it will do that, but I wish for something better.

And while they're at it, Rolling Stone can retract that U2 Album of the Year pick too.

Cupid's Got a Brand New Gun

I saw the placement of these two magazines at the grocery store and it made me laugh.....well - and it made me stop and take a picture too.

Maybe the stockboy has a fun sense of humour, or maybe it was all by accident. There just seems to be a little testosterone floating around Giant Eagle these days.

What The Fudge ??

Apparently 'WTF' no longer means what I thought it meant. And I guess it's no longer just an abbreviation for a profanity work-around for television censors and a necessary three letter standard for instant messaging or emailing.

Well, actually it is still used for all those things....and now one more. It is the magazine for Finland. I wonder if the folks from Helsinki know it is just a shortcut to the f-bomb?

So on this post, I break my title as being the same as a song title. I could not think of anything good with the word 'Welcome' (...to the jungle? ...to the pleasuredome?), let alone with 'fuck' or 'Finland'.

It's just so hard to be me!
