Begging

Last night was Beggar's Night.

We had a very unseasonably warm day. Thank you Climate Change.

Actually, the last four years have been decent weather. This year, I sat on our front stoop in a t-shirt and shorts.

In my youth, we wore parkas over our costumes due to the snow and / or cold.

For those who recall, at our last house, we literally (not figuratively) had three trick or treaters......in 15 years. So with the "new" place, that's greatly increased - though it's all relative.

There is a street not far from us called 'Scarborough'.  For Halloween, it changes to 'Scareborough'. The residents go all out. All of them. I bought one bag of candy (mind you - 185 pieces were said bag), but on Scareborough it's probably 10 bags per house. People drive in for that place.

We live on a one block street, so we can easily be missed. Still, I think we had about 50-60 kids. And seriously one wasn't even that. Two parents and their four month old in a stroller.......getting candy. She was dressed as a duck. But I'm also guessing she's choking to death on those Milk Duds that went into her bag.

We oddly only had one family from our street stop. The others, I never saw. And I sat out there for two hours. The rest of the folks were unknown to me.

To be honest, save one Chucky costume, the rest were very uninspired, and so no one stood out. Well, I guess, I did.

Standing on the porch a group of kids walks by and I hear this: "I told you, it's the guy with the cane! We've already been there!!".

Ouch.

710 got a big chuckle out of that retelling.

At least they didn't say "old dude".

So, while I told each person to take 2-3 pieces, some were so respectful and just take one (maybe they didn't like my selections), and one or two just took handfuls. I didn't care.

One girl, maybe OCD, just kept digging and digging through the bowl. Look for something. Looking for something else. I had to tell her it was just all more of the same.

I can't blame her if she was bypassing the Whoppers. Ick - malted milk balls. But when the bowl came in with me, I did note that most of the Milk Duds were gone. Drats. I mean, I'm never eating the Hershey bars. 710 likes the Reeses, so he can have those. And as always, the Kit Kats will stick around until there is nothing else sweet in the house and we finally succumb to finishing those off.........months from now.

I'd prepped 80% of dinner before our designated trick / treat time. I popped into the oven 20 minutes before begging was to end. And you have a Cooking post coming your way next week. With my standard weekend posts and this damned election, who knows when anything food related ends up here.

Unfortunately too many of our voters are like that girl rummaging through the bowl, looking for something she will never find. (Those girls later end up in my office btw 😂)
