Not Enough Time

Time (Clock of the Heart)
Yikes indeed.
Long before we moved back, I knew that a clock I assumed my great-grandfather made (he was a jeweler) was displayed in a restaurant not far from where 710 and I resided.
As we have moved a few times in the city, each time has brought us physically closer to this place.
Over the years, I have made overtures to purchase the clock. The then owner, Brendan, said he never sells anything that was hanging in the restaurant, and there was a LOT of stuff on the walls - including said clock.
Right at the beginning of the pandemic Brendan sold the place. I initially reached back out to Brendan then, what does he care, but he relayed that he sold the business and everything in the building to the new owners.
I read this in the news and figured out the new owners and put in a few seemingly promising inquiries, and then it went silent. Then the people who bought the place sold it without ever doing any reno, or even opening, as we were all on lockdown. So, I went through the process again - to no avail.
Years - yes, years - later the place reopened. Same name, pseudo-same vibe, but with a lot less stuff on the walls, including the clock. No one seemed to know a thing about it, though from certain sources, I heard they had a roomful of art and such that they never put back up. They claimed it was no longer there. Bother.
Two weeks ago, the new owners were shuttering the place. I made one final attempt. We had some good back and forth, but eventually they came back with, "sorry - it's just gone". I thanked them and figured it might turn up on eBay, but more likely in a dumpster somewhere. I even stopped by the place on a Monday to see if they'd let me rummage around the art room - but it was locked, though everything was still in place.
Fast forward to last Friday, the last weekday of the month. I was at a funeral for a mentor of mine. I positioned myself in the back of the church for any number of reasons (lightning hitting me was not out of the question). It was the whole, sit down, kneel, stand, rah rah rah kind of service. I mostly sat.
The priest was fucking HOT, but other than that, it was a mostly by-the-numbers church funeral. Then my phone buzzed.
My heart and spirits immediately pricked up.
I'm sure I broke a lot of etiquette here, but I was texting with the manager back and forth, and could I get there soon to pick it up. I explained I was at a funeral but could be by in 90 minutes. ....and then silence.
So, I just panicked and said, I'd be there in 30. As I was in the back, and it was SRO, I figured few would notice and I just opened up a seat for someone.
I silently thanked Bob, the deceased, for maybe having some pull and it was just good karma overall.
The front door was open, there was almost nothing left in the place. Three tables, with the clock laying on two of them pushed together. I found the manager who told me they found it under a stairwell beneath some plywood! It was literally the last thing in the place. Well, figuratively, I guess - since you know three tables.
She turned down my offer for compensation and just told me to enjoy it. I was not expecting that.
As it would turn out, while my grandfather did make jewelry - I have a ring and pocket watch from him, he sold, but not made, the wall clock. It was from New Haven, CT. I guess it stands to reason - jewelers sell products from multiple vendors, I suppose it wasn't completely different in the 19th and early 20h century.
Yes, those are his initials that the Griffin is holding.
Unsurprisingly, the clock being over 100 years, doesn't work. I'm not even sure what parts are missing yet to get it to work. Maybe it will never work. But we'll want to fix and clean up the woodwork and then find a place to hang it in the house.
I don't know what to do with it after me. The last name ends with me on my side. I have a cousin who has a son with our last name. I suppose I could give it to him. Or maybe donate it to the Maltz Museum here in Cleveland. For all the probable crappy things my great-grandfather did, he cofounded a Hebrew Loan agency that helped Jewish refugees get established in the U.S.. The museum might like something like that. I don't know.
I have time to figure it out. (see what I did there??)

Erase / Replace
Let's almost forget that two days ago we had a record high - 74 degrees. In November! The next day (yesterday), it was 32. And snow. And sleet. And lightening and thunder.
No - it was just one of those times that one is scheduled on the Karma Klock. One of those things we all go through and my time was up.
I lost my wallet.
Fuck.
I had it at the gym. I had it post-gym, as I got a tea. ...and then I got home and it was nowhere to be seen.
Fuck Fuck Fuck Fuck.
I searched the car - in case. I searched the garage - just in case. I even traced a walk I took after getting home to see an accident on the hill. All were for not.
I made a call to Starbucks, but they claim no one turned it in. Even if they did - I'm guessing the $43 wouldn't be with it.
As annoying as missing the cash is - it was more the credit cards and especially the driver's license that got my goat.
American Express and the bank were great....and easy. As it was past noon, I figured I missed my opportunity for the DMV and that I'd be illegally driving for the next few days until I could get there to replace my license. But a quick look on-line said a few were open until 14:00 or 15:00.
Lies.
Well, partial lies. The first one - the closest - was indeed closed at noon. The other one, this time after calling, was open until 14:00. We arrived at 13:35.
The thing about a missing wallet is you're kind of useless. 710 had to drive (as I had no license) and had to pay for the new one (as I had no cash and no means to get any). Chauffeured and given $$$$ ? What's not to love about this?
Still, the DMV is what Emma Lazarus was talking about: the tired, poor and huddled masses. And lord did I yearn to be free!
I 'joked' with 710, that I'm just back from the gym on a cold cold day and I didn't think I was camera ready.
The paperwork was painless, and even though I brought the two IDs the website told me, they didn't even look at my passport. Mostly, it was a lot of sitting around and waiting. And watching human behaviour. The woman next to us arguing with her mother on the phone, while the mother argued with the electric company. Or the people who actually entered at 13:59. Who does this? I thought I was pushing it by getting there 25 minutes before closing.
....and there wasn't a cute guy to be seen.
Finally, they call me to get my picture taken. This was another keen observation by me. I think. But true to the Dump manifesto, it's part racist and part misogynistic. Save 710 and myself, there was only one other caucasian person in the DMV - including the workers.
I'm getting the questions the clerks ask: organ donation, living will, etc. Or my second favourite: "are you legally allowed to be driving and had a valid driver's license?" Ummm......honey, doesn't your screen tell you that? Cuz I'm guessing it does. If not, then fuck - everyone who has a suspended license should hightail it to the DMV.
As I waited and waited and waited, I watched the women getting their license and taking multiple photos - until they found one they liked.
Honest to g-d, this one chick said, "no....let's do it again, that makes me look fat". Honey - it is a face shot. The camera don't lie - or add 10lbs. Those are the Mars bars you've been eating.
Even the clerk to the woman right before me: "you have such a nice smile, let's do it again, and show everyone that smile." And then turning around the monitor - "see?".
I'm thinking, 'I could have been out of here 10 minutes ago if it weren't being treated like a model shoot.
So now it's my turn - and just a reminder, I'm the only white person and the only guy.
"Look here". {flash} "Ok....you're done".
OUCH!
A. I was correct: I was not camera ready.
B. Losing the wallet and now this = insult to injury.
C. I totally get all those questions asking if I habitually used drugs & alcohol.
But fuck - now I know why Dump is all about how hard it is for the white male. We don't get do-overs.
.....I mean he did, obvi.
But the rest of us don't have that luxury.
Oh - and I (well, 710) had to buy me a new wallet to house my new license. My cousin David will be happy about that, as he thinks my old wallet rivaled George Costanza's.

Daylight
Sorry, "movie trailer".
Yes, I bet you thought you were getting Halloween pictures today, didn't you? Well you're wrong. Those kind of parties start after sundown and go for a while. I was in no mood or shape (probably, as I'm drafting this before the actual party) to get a post up for early morning.
You'll see the outcome on Tuesday.
Today is Daylight Saving. Fall backward, as it were. Though, how many people fall backwards? When you fall, I bet it is usually forwards.
Anyway, I do love how these videos have gotten so professional.
"It's not plural" is my favourite line.
