the Painter

We watched another documentary, this one about Martin Mull.

My introduction to Mull was Fernwood Tonigh (which also brought us Fred Willard.). The two would work together years later on the History of White People in America.

I was young enough to not get it. I didn't understand the concept or the humour. It used to follow Mary Hartman Mary Harman.

Yes, I got to know him from just being around in lots and lots and lots of things - including Clue, Mr. Mom, Arrested Development, VEEP, Roseanne, etc.

And while I remember him now and then on that show to have a guitar, I didn't really know he was a musician.

Other than Joan Rivers, I didn't know anyone else guest hosted the Tonight Show. Mull would do it over 30 times. Who knew??

As a comedian and musician he would open for Springsteen, Zappa, Billy Joel and such. Again, who knew?

In reality, he was a painter. With a B.A. and Masters from the Rhode Island School of Design.

By his own admission, music and acting were there to fund his painting. Painting was his true passion - and who knew - he was very very good at it.  They are quite impressive.

Mull says at the beginning what I think a lot were thinking:  "I haven't done anything to merit a documentary".

When you break it down, he's not wrong. But how it's put together is interesting and entertaining. And it was produced and directed (well co-directed) by Bob Saget.

Saget co-directed because he died while making it. As did Willard. As did Norman Lear and shortly after, Mull himself. ....oh, and Roseanne Barr's career.

Mull was more than worthy of a documentary. It is very well filmed and edited. Though to be honest, all the laughs came from Willard. But we did LOL
