Cake had a few "hits". You'd have to know where to look for those, but it wasn't anywhere Casey Kasem or Shadow Stevens might haunt.
The band hasn't been actively recording - or at least releasing - material since 2011. They keep implying they will be releasing material since 2024......but crickets.
I tend to go back to a few songs, but lately it's been "Short Skirt / Long Jacket" from 2001. ...if nothing else for the bass line. And maybe the trumpet. You just rarely hear that instrument in a rock song........unless you're Chicago.
The song borders rock and funk - and that works for me. I like the lyrics and the vocals.
As always, their lead vocalist is somewhat monotone but what they do, it works. They don't overreach and that suits them.
It's hard to believe the song is 25 years old.
The video - well.........it's not exactly hard to hear the song, but it is built around asking people what they think of the song. As you'll see, it's mixed - but at least they didn't sugar coat it.
There are a few things about the vid that just make me think: Ren Wang-Loi is one of the surveyed (though he says nothing), but where they cut him in and his facial reaction seems.........off. And then I don't know what the fuck song Tammy Thompson is dancing to, but it ain't this one.
And there are two "old guys" (probably younger than me now) who dislike it for "the noise". You have to believe they listened to rock and roll in the late 60s and they just kind of spurn it now.
There is an unofficial video of the song with just Diana Rigg as Emma Peel from the Avengers. That kind of works too.
