My Music Monday

For the most part, I'm stymied by "punk rock". Or what is - and isn't - considered punk.

To me, the majority of it seems no different than straight forward rock and roll.

I always feel that people who couldn't really play music or sing, but still got record deals were considered punk as just opposed to being bad.  ....yeah, I'm looking at you Sex Pistols.

At the time (late '70s) the Clash were considered punk, but I listen(ed) to them then and now and just hear rock music.

The IDLES are considered punk, and they certainly lean in that direction more than most bands with that genre attached. They have a frenetic energy for sure. Maybe the Hives too. Maybe. Again, I just see it as rock.

The Menzingers, according to their wiki page, are considered punk as well. I know some of their songs, but not a lot of their work. Some of them have punk-tendencies, but again, it seems like straight forward rock.  .....with which I'm fine.

I like rock music.

But the Menzingers have a new song and a new record. "Nobody's Heroes" is a song I find interesting, and not just because the lead singer plays guitar left-handed, the way g-d intended! It is a well put together rock song.

The song is well put togther and performed. It is hard not to identify with the opening lines: "Just can't make this shit up / Gotta keep your head up / I know it's easier said than done."  Or that could just be my state of mind.

But they are smart enough using the line "Strange premonitions" and clever enough not to follow up with "20/20 hindsight" when most any other band would have sang "20/20 vision".  I applaud that.

Nothing flashy. Nothing auto-tuned. The basic instrument set. Right now, it's my favourite song of 2026.
