Tim Curry's death was unexpectedly expected. He did a an NYT Magazine article a few months back. Which indicated he wasn't well, though if they specifically said from what, I don't remember. But well enough to do a feature interview.
I didn't know Curry's oeuvre well. Sure, Rocky Horror Picture Show and Clue. Or a few episodes of Roseanne. That's about it for me.
His imdb will tell you he probably made a more than decent living with voice acting in cartoons or video games. The list goes on forever.
Almost three years ago I wrote about Rocky Horror for a My Music Monday piece.
Curry, whether good or bad for his career, playing Frank N. Furter was a career defining moment. I imagine some casting directors couldn't see past his Furter character. He played it so fucking well. Everything was over the top yet at the same time it wasn't. It was a balancing act I'm guessing only he could truly pull off.
His character was outrageous and sympathetic at the same time. You rooted for him.
In that post I give a brief notice on my affection for Sweet Transvestite.
His performance of this song is just perfect. The vocal, sure. But every single movement. Every inflection. Every camera angle. Every raised eyebrow. ....and ever decaping, (it's a word!.......now.)
THIS is the performance that drew me into the movie. For me, there was no way they could do better than this. They still can't.

After seeing Rocky Horror Picture when the screen version came out in 1975, in the ensuing years I saw it as live theatre several times in various productions, and each one had me YEARNING to see Tim Curry's portrayal again. Not that the others were 'bad' (none of them seeking to emulate Curry, which was quite right) but that his faultless depiction set the bar so high that I can't even imagine anyone doing a better job of it. If he goes down in history as how it ought to be done, that legacy would be fully justifiable.
So, two celebs in two days saying farewell at the big 8-0 - an age which I myself reach in a mere very few weeks (Eek!)
He has a very bad stroke (brain bleed) a few years ago. He was a great talent.
Susan Sarandon ruins this movie for me, never much of a Tim Curry fan anyway. I realize I’m in the minority
